How to get original documents returned?

Ugh...when filing for the I-130 (which has been approved) I neglected to note how many times the word 'copy' was inserted in the list of requested documentation, i.e. a COPY of my birth certificate, etc., and submitted originals. Fortunately, I do still have certified copies of those documents but it leave me short for future submissions of whatever and are a pain to replace.

Is it possible to get original documents returned and any idea where I would begin?

Many Thanks!

Marie

NVC will receive all the submitted I-130 documents, and I want to assume that those documents are forwarded to the embassy along with everything you send directly to them.

Be sure to specifically ask for them at your interview when you are done. I didnt :( And now they are in the mysterious brown envelope and sealed.

I'll have to make a request to USCIS to get them back, after POE...

"Copy of birth certificate" is confusing because it could mean photocopy or it could mean a certified copy, as in the actual thing.

The visa applicant should get all their original documents returned at the end of the interview, get your spouse to ask about yours too. (I'm assuming you're the USC.)

Unfortunately, there is now way to get them back for the next NVC stages now. However, they will be forwarded by USCIS to the NVC, and from there to the embassy. In the interview, you may request them to be returned. No promises there, but it would not hurt to ask. So if getting them back now to send with the DS-230 is what you are looking to do, start getting new originals now!

Good Luck!!

There is a form letter you can send to USCIS requesting the return of your originals. You will have to send another set of originals to NVC. I made the mistake of sending all our certified originals to USCIS

and I had to get certified originals again for NVC.
