Timeline

My fiancee and I will live and work in the US for the next 5-10 years. I already have property in her name I bought in her home town in General Santos, Mindanao. I also have some farm leases that bring in money every month for her now. We plan on building a boarding house, and maybe internet cafe, let it be ran by her family and build an income stream from it. We have plans to buy land and build a home in Davao, which is considered the safest city in the PI. Hopefully when I get ready to leave my job for good, we can have a home we can travel to for months at a time without worry about where our living expenses will come from. She is educated with a degree and has already gotten job offers there, but turned them down to come be my wife. These are our tentative plans and so far things seem to be headed that way. I am also working on a way to create an income here besides my job that can continue while we are in PI.

Unless your are retired with a steady pension or are independently wealthy, how can you support your family? You cannot, by law, be employed by a filipino company...your employment options are super limited.

That alone is a killer for any thoughts of moving there for me.

Wasn't a choice for us. He's serving in the military so the US had to be our choice, although we both really LOVED living in China (we met there). After his term, and once I finish grad school here, we plan to live elsewhere. As a speech pathologist I can pretty much work anywhere, and he wants to work in foreign service for the US gov't. Sad part is that I gave up my job and left my family for him to move here but in a few months he is leaving me for a 14 month deployment. When he comes back I will already be graduating from grad school. Our love for each other makes it worth it though.

The consideration for my wife to come to the USA was of 2 main reasons for us. First, she had little contact with her immediate family, including her parents. On the other hand I had an intact relationship with my parents, and they are already 80 years old. To go to the Philippines and us to not be rich would be the same as being told my parents had only a handful of days left to live...that is how seldom I would see them in the rest of their lives.

Second, it would have been very difficult for me to get a good job in the Philippines. It was easier in our case for my wife to get a good job here.

We do plan on retiring in the Philippines on a beautiful island, Palawan.

Ahhh, you're right. With the 13a and a DOL work permit you can...jobs there don't sound very appealing though:

Yup..I'm on 13A and I could work here if I wanted ..but working 6 days a week..10-12 hours a day for $200-300 a month just isn't that appealing...and that's if you can find a job competing with thousands of college educated Filipinos working in Jollibee or SM department store. I really wanted to post to this thread earlier but then I saw the OP appears to be very young...I WONDER where he's from to be tazzed and abused by the local US law enforcement while haveing his rights stripped away buying a beer. Not meant as a flame but does the words 'Third World Country' mean anything? Btw, IF you have a medical emergengy in the PI (Heart attack, major auto accident, etc) you WILL die. There's NO 911 and NO EMTs here and the ambulance has to sit in traffic like everyone else (if you can get one)!

I haven't been personally tazed , but you read in the news everyday about people having less rights in the usa and it makes me feel disillusioned . And about the beer, its just the difference in attitude that I like about the Philippines, no one would question a person here buying a beer, or ask for id, or give them any type of hard time about it. I just feel like here you get more personal responsibility with no hand holding.

I agree about the medical, I think St lukes is the only chance of survival here if something bad happens, if you can make it there and afford it. I haven't seen any other hospitals so far that i felt were decent. (as of yet). Another plus is the medical is affordable here unlike in the USA.

I respect you views and we all see life through differant perspectives but there area few 'For Sures' here. One is if you ever get involved with the law here..whether Innocent or not...you will never go to trial and the ONLY way you'll get out of the fix is to dig DEEP into your wallet..IF your a foreigner..your guilty EVERYTIME! Do a little research on foreigners arrested in the PI.

Do you REALLY feel safer with an armed guard at Mcdonalds? The armed guards you see at the every entrance to every buiness are very poorly trained and, in many cases, are more dangerous than the criminal themselves. Research the Mark Dizon murders in Angeles last year.OR the Billy Miller murder. And the list goes on and on...all unsolved or unprosecuted cases because no one wanted to pay the fee to pursue. The Philippines survives on corruption from the lowly guard all the way to the top of the feeding chain. Always has been that way ..always will. The Philippines was controlled and goverened by Mexico (not Spain) for 250 years. In most cases, they are twins...research...you may not feel quite so comfortable living here when you through..JMHO

you shouldn't have capitalized the NO. you are incorrect. I've been to a 911 call center and I know some EMTs.

Where? Nation wide? EMTs on an ambulance? My Asawa just dialed 911 and number does not exist. I'm in Olongapo. Educate me because I googled it to make sure and NO 911 in PI.
