Hi Everyone...

We arrived at the Philly INS office at 7:55, cleared security and up to the 2nd floor by 8am. The receptionist took our Interview notice and advised us where to go.. Daughter was to be interviewed on the 2nd floor, I made my way up to the 3rd floor where my Interview Officer was waiting for me. He was very very pleasant. The interviewer went over the information on the application - travel dates needed to be updated for recent travel and then onto the interview questions.

1. What did the Declaration of Independence do?

2. If both the President and the VP cannot serve, who becomes President?

3.. What is the Supreme law of the land?

4. How many amendments to the Constitution?

5. We elect a US representative for how many years?

6. How many Justices on the Supreme Court?

He approved my application and invited me to participate in the Oath Ceremony Friday Oct 28th at 2pm. He was willing to walk with me to find where my daughter was to have that Officer put my Daughter in the same Oath Ceremony.... as we were walking down the hall.. we found her 3 door down with a very stern looking man. Daughter said he lightened up very early into the interview, approved her - didn't go over her application at all, as I had signed that I had prepared the document. He did ask her for more information about her underage drinking charge and giggled that it was changed to disorderly conduct/fighting.. He too gave her the invite for the Oath, Friday Oct 24th.

I dreaded this entire process as to date everything we did with the INS was a hassle... our files were MIA for about 18 months... anyway.. So glad it is over and Friday we free of the INS.

Question about the Passport; do we need to update our SSN to citizen before applying for Passports?

No, passport application can be done before SS update. As a matter of fact, when I asked the SSA office, they said to wait a week before going in to update my record to make sure my naturalization number kicks in and all agencies can see it. However, I am sure you are aware that it needs to be done after oath and not now....

One question though - are you and your daughter in the same oath ceremony? I am hoping it is a typo that your daughter is 24th and your are 28th....

No, passport application can be done before SS update. As a matter of fact, when I asked the SSA office, they said to wait a week before going in to update my record to make sure my naturalization number kicks in and all agencies can see it. However, I am sure you are aware that it needs to be done after oath and not now....

One question though - are you and your daughter in the same oath ceremony? I am hoping it is a typo that your daughter is 24th and your are 28th....

Yep, I know we have to do the Oath before the Passport.. yes, sorry typo.. we both do the Oath on the 28th. Thank you!

However, after I arrived at the USCIS office the officer told me that they cannot interview me today because they didn't receive my file yet from another office. I was told that I will be receiving another appointment letter. It was disappointing (my original interview date had already been rescheduled once because I moved to a different state). Did anyone else have a similar experience? I worry it will be a long wait until I get my next appointment letter. Thanks.

Did you apply then move or did you move first then apply?

I applied at the end of June and moved at the beginning of September. My first interview date was September 19 at the office based on the address at the time of application. This was then rescheduled for today at my new office. Thanks for your help.

That makes sense then. They usually require to wait 3 months before applying when moving to a different district office, if you move before you apply. However, if you move after an application has been submitted, it will need to be transferred and that can take time.

Just to followup on my previous comment, when I was at my interview, my entire folder was there. I applied for AOS in Michigan, ROC in Alabama and Naturalization in Texas. They had everything. Even I believe I saw the envelope I mailed my applications in! It doesn't look like they throw away anything.

So it takes time to move folders from one district to another...

Anyway, given that I didn't receive a cancellation notice this time, it was very disappointing to get turned away because they didn't have the file. The office that has my file (according to the officer) is located in the state I moved from. It is at about three and a half hours driving distance, so I can't imagine why it takes this long to send the file. I've been reading the forum for similar stories and some people were delayed for months or even years! I really hope that won't happen in my case though I feel like there isn't much I can do now. Have you heard of anyone withdrawing their current application and sending a new application?

I can't say I have. However, the hope is that since your file was recognized to be somewhere else, your IO may have placed a request to forward it quickly to process the pending application. I am not sure if this will make any difference, but you can try to schedule an infopass and see if you can get more information or even better have the officer place a service request for you to move your folder. Yes, I did submit an address change. They have my new address - my second interview appointment was sent to my new address. I think I'll give it a week or so and then schedule the infopass. Thanks.

My Oath is on Wednesday. I actually planned to apply for Emergency Passport application through Boston Passport agency since I have to go oversees in less than 2 weeks.

SSA people are usually there at the Oath. If you don't need a new card, you just fill out the form and give it to them. That's it, you're done. They don't even send you a letter or anything.

It does not have anything to do with passport application. A lot of people apply the same day. Your SSN is still the same, you provide it when you apply for the passport - that's it.
