I actually prefer crumpets (hard to get here, but common-as-gophers in Calgary).

You can get crumpets in Trader Joe's if you're near one.

My tip for food travel: pack it in shoe boxes. I've even packed Flakes in shoe boxes with other chocolate and no padding, and they have survived beautifully. McVities are like you just got them in the shop -- no broken ones! It works great for glass too as there is a double wall of protection. I even go as far as stating what is in each shoe box so when security go through my case they can get a good idea of what's happening. Been doing this for years with no problems at all, and not one bit of food has gone walkies either

No one has ever asked me if I was bringing food into the UK--I've been four times.

I have brought packaged food and homemade Christmas cookies without a problem.

I've brought a medium sized duffel bag filled with candy/cookies/assorted sweet things and mt. dew before with no problems (besides the weight from the mt dew, which wasn't a big deal, and slightly melty chocolate), as well, to chime in with the 'it shouldn't be a problem's. The person who checked my bag was incredibly confused why I was packing mt. dew and suggested I just buy it when I was overseas, and I had to explain to her that it's not available there (or when it is, it's horribly expensive).

Though new TSA rules make it incredibly difficult--as you can no longer carry it onboard (and carbonated drinks blow up the containers when frozen)

What would happen if you claimed that all of it was for "personal consumption"? (seriously, I've carried much foodstuff from Canada into US that way).

Good question. I really don't know! I have combed the UK Customs site for information, and the closest thing I can find to an answer is that you can't bring in anything over £145 without paying tax on it. Does this mean I can bring in whatever non-liquid junk food I please unless the amount exceeds £145?

With my luck, I can just picture being held up at customs because I have an XL sized suitcase brimming with Barnum's Animal Crackers, Nutter Butter cookies and Reese's Cups!!!!!
