Government Shutdown and Immigration: (How) Will It Affect Me?

Thank you for the link. It tells me we might get through NVC, but get held up at the consulate. We got NOA2 on 4/4 and on 4/6 the NVC told me it takes 10-15 business days to receive and process all the documentation from VSC. She also said it takes another 3-5 days to get to the embassy. I expect those numbers are padded.

K1 Process:

NOA1 17 Sept 10

Touched 3 Oct 10

Placed Service Request 25 March 11

NOA2 4 April 11

Left NVC 15 April 11

Packet 3 letter dated 19 April 11

Packet 3 response sent 6 May 11

Interview 26 May 11

K1 received 1 June 11

Entered US 26 June 11

Married 6 August 11

No visas or interviews will be done. All consulate and embassy staff, other than those deemed essential will be sent home until a budget is passed.

So longer AP, longer waits etc.

I guess the good news is...if you can call it that....once a budget is accepted, workers have to report to work the next day, regardless of if it has been signed into law yet.

I doubt it would last that long Shorah. They are pretty much in agreement on everything except a few things and they feel like playing inept fools (not hard for them) so they are dragging this out.

If it shutsdown, it would probably be a week or so.

I hope is doesnt happen at all, I know a couple of people who have their interviews next week so they would be screwed.

But if it does happen would I keep my interview date? And what happens to those poor people who would get canceled?

Not 100% but I am sure you would keep your interview date and if they do what they did last shutdown (1995/1996) they would reschedule people who missed their interview for the earliest possible time they have.

Actually, On Fox they said that this time it will be much less "shut-downy" than last time. Department of State and Homeland Security will be in full staff which means that this time they WILL process visas and they WILL admit immigrants etc.

In fact, in both of these Departments they considered 85-90% employees essential. In addition, they will process passports with the same pace.

I'm sorry I should have clarified myself. I was talking about US Embassy's worldwide will be shutdown except for emergencies. Meaning no visas at those US Embassy's will be issued. They might get accepted here in the states through USCIS or NVC but everything at the US Embassy will be put on hold.
