She is married to her second cousin.

... A marriage of convenience not love.

That's what they say in West Virginia too.

Many times people from less well off former republics will marry someone from Moscow, Kiev or St Petersburg to get out of Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, etc. Kind of an immigration fraud in itself.

WTH! I'm still stuck in Georgia...

Oh, right.

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!

Actually she talked to a few people in some travel agencies over there and they say the best thing to do is to use a Guest Visa. So I'll write them a letter explaining our situation and why I'd like her to visit, and we'll try for that. Worse case, we'll just wait for the K-1 to go through... which sadly is going to take EVEN LONGER NOW with the damn government shutdown...

Guest visa equals Tourist Visa - it's the same category: B-2. The only difference is though, that instead of paying for a tour she will explain that she'll be staying with you.

There is no government shut down yet

Tourist agencies LOVE to help you. Be advised, you do NOT need to pay anyone to help you with a tourist visa and doing so has NO affect on if it is approved or not. Be SURE that everything she tells them is completely honest and truthful or it WILL cause you a problem with the K-1 visa.

Why would the visa processing sections of USCIS shut down? It's funded by fees and therefore pays for itself.

Why would the visa processing sections of USCIS shut down? It's funded by fees and therefore pays for itself.

If the government shuts down, USCIS petition processing will shut down.

Why?

Because the fees do not go directly to your petition. It is not like dry cleaning where the fee you pay is used to clean your clothes. It is more like car insurance for your teenager. You want to drive the car? Pay for your portion of the insurance. Your portion is $60 per month. Hand it over. The kid hands over his insurance money and that's that. Right? Wrong. Daddy pays $180 per month for himself, mom and the other teenager, for example. DADDY loses his job and drops the insurance because he can no longer afford it. But, junior HOWLS!!!!!! I PAY FOR MY OWN INSURANCE! See.

If a budget is not approved, non-essential parts of the government WILL shut down. USCIS is a part of the government and petition processing is not essential. USCIS employees at VSC were told not to report to work Monday unless a budget deal is reached. None of them work weekends and adjudicators only work 4, 10 hour days per week, so many went home Thursday anyway. the first day any petitions would miss being processed is Monday. If the government is shut down for 10 days, for example, it would delay everyone's processing for 10 days.

I get that. But when they talk balanced budget, this isn't one of the agencies that's losing money.

The post office IS losing money, but they will keep that open.

The whole purpose of these shutdowns (usually threatened) is political, there is nothing practical about it. Attempting to apply logic to an illogical thing is one of those things that causes stress in life. The Dems failed to produce a budget for FY2011 even though they were required to do so by law because it could not possibly have helped them in the November elections. When they lost the elections (big time) they just pouted and did nothing, handing a political football to the Repubs, hoping they would fumble it. By all rights the government SHOULD have shut down months ago. That is if ANYthing meant ANYthing. It doesn't.

They (politicians) do not care about you or me or your fiancee or spouse. They do not care if you wait 6 months, 9 months, or 10 years.

They are trying to get what they want by a means other than being a majority. They lost an election but still want what they want. The only way they can get it is to threaten not to pass a budget in the Senate. If the government shuts down, they then "blame" it on the Repubs. This is why they did not pass a budget last year. Had they passed one before the election the Repubs would have used it against them in the elections. But they knew they could always throw a temper tantrum later and put the Repubs on the spot.

The problem is that people become dependent on the government (this is not a mistake) and they squeeze the people they have made dependent to scream and write letters and send "Tweets" (I could never bring myself to send anything called a "tweet" and if I did I would have to take my gun off first...have to)

If we all ignored them, this would never happen. Like children stamping their feet.
