My son collects an orphan's benefit from his father's CPP, will he still collect this when we move to the US? It's money that I'd like to continue putting into his savings if I can....

I've been all over the gov't site and haven't been able to find anything about it, just fyi...

That site is ok--Not Gospel,lol! I no longer really visit that site. At 1 time the dude that answered 90% of the question was Nelson---Sort of a grumpy dude,lol

I received an Orphan's benefit for several years, but it expired the same month I moved to the US because it was also the same month I graduated from college. They were sent notification when I graduated, so it was automatically stopped. So unfortunately I can't be much help!! But, I do believe he would still be eligible for this. If I were you, I'd call CRA and ask. If he is still eligible, they will likely charge a non-resident tax on the monthly payments, so they will need to be notified either way.

Yes. The orphan's benefit will continue to be paid to you while he's under 18, and to him from 18 to 25 as long as he's a full-time student.

You will continue to collect your CPP survivor benefit even if you remarry, and your son will collect his even if he gets married before age 26 as long as he is a full-time student.

There's a form that he'll have to send in every year confirming that he's still enrolled in school.

4. Am I eligible for benefits if I attend school outside Canada?

Yes – if the CPP recognizes the school, and you continue to meet all other conditions of eligibility.

I can agree with what was said. My best friend's Dad died (he was Canadian, but they all lived in the U.S.) and they filed for the benefits and got them, even though they lived in another country. Their Dad was Canadian, so they were allowed to receive the benefits.
