 Heck, I would offer them jobs but no one wanted to work 60 hours a week for $300...per month. Go figure. I guess hot women only go so far.

Indeed. My husband made minimum wage, worked 38 hours a week on top of studying for 40+ hours in uni, and spent all of his extra money on Greyhound tickets to visit me. :) And I'm not even hot! It's amazing.

I was making a good American salary plus 40% overseas bonus, tax free, with a private driver (who I didn't use to go to work because the buses had so many hot women) and a super deluxe downtown flat. Hot women were fringe benefits

I had the 2nd best job in Ukraine. My driver had the best job.

I actually did not meet Alla until the end of that work so I was doing it "on speculation"

Then I said, well when I get there, I'll just take a shower and go check out this pub called Eric's Bierstube as it's next to my flat.

Eric's has a good reputation, but we didn't go there, but walked a number of times. Our apartment was right behind St. Sophia's; we could see all from our windows.

Well...she immediately did an about face and said oh no no no...I can't leave you alone in Kiev. She said something could happen. So she's going to wait for me at my flat.

This actually is a somewhat good sign that at least she is not just meeting you for a fling.

And then we'll go have some dinner and maybe hit a club. She mentioned having one of her friends keeping me company while she's at work. I think she wants to keep an eye on me... :hehe:

Don't hit on the friend, remember.

I told her not to worry as I was considering a day trip to Cernobyl while she's at work. Her response...."why would ANYONE want to go near that evil place??"

Also take along, or buy discretely, a padlock. If you can, find the Love Bridge....it's somewhere just south of St. Michaels and the Mansion just south of there but I believe just before the Stadium. It's on the park walk up on top of the hill from the lower area by the river. Anyway it's a walk bridge over a road that lovers paint their names on a padlock and lock it to the railings of the bridge. There's thousands of locks of all shapes and sizes. Very unique.

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Good idea. Yes, if things seem to be going very well, ask her to to see "Chortov." She'll know what you're talking about. :) I hear they cut the locks off periodically now though, so get a picture. :)

In addition, Kievian's also love their "Love Bridge", otherwise known as "Chortov". The official name is Parkovy ( "Park Bridge"). It was built in 1904, although some disput the year as being 1915. The bridge connects City Park (City Garden) and Khreschaty Park, crossing Petrivs'ka Aleya. Each Bridge has its own unique structure.

Alla and stumbled upon this when we were there in Feb., 2009. We took pictures but didn't know about the locks.

Hey thanks that padlock is a good, inexpensive idea

Soooo...let's see if I can remember this one. Don't hit on the hot friend no matter what she does....it could be a test ?? :help::wacko:

Here's the second one in case folks were wondering about the walk

Hey thanks that padlock is a good, idea

It would be best if you painted hers and your name and month and year on it or the back.

Have it on your person when you plan to take that walk, look on the map of the city for the location but do not ask about it or specifically plan to visit it. Then when you two "happen" to discover it, you whip out the lock and show it to her. She will be very impressed with your knowledge of the place and your thinking of the two of you as a couple. Then you two kiss the lock and together clasp it around a railing support. You then take her into your arms, look directly into her eyes..... and then...

Cut to commercial..... Announcer states," Will they kiss?". "Will (her name) accept him?". "Will Johnny wimp out?". "will these two become as one?".

"Stay tuned for the next episode.". "Same Bat time, Same Bat channel"

The railing supports are kind of large so a tiny little lock wouldn't fit . Maybe a cable lock, like from one of your handguns would work but there's little room for the names.

Remember these small things that show you think of her and that you can be emotional will endear you to her.

I'm not sure about the padlock... Mostly people do the lock-thing when they're getting married... Sometimes couples, who have been dating for years also get a lock. It's romatic, but it does show a serious commitment, so it would definitely scare me away if a man wanted to do that after a week long relationship.

Maybe it's just me... but i would be careful with a thing like that.

I think they have known each other for more than a week!

And I would surmise that this meeting was agreed upon because they find each other mutually attracted to each other and that there us a big chance that each has found the one .

If it's less than that then just bring a ribbon and tie that.

Or just take pictures.

I didn't know about it and know that Alla would have loved the surprise that I described. We were in Kiev for our first meeting and at the end of it we decided to get married.

I get the impression they've been doing the long distance relationship thing for awhile though. A lot of people, especially going the mob route, use the "visit" to propose. But I agree that the "spark" should really be there first. There's nothing wrong with the first trip leading to a second trip instead of a K1.

Good luck to the OP hiding that lock though. ;)

I had absolutely NO intention of geting engaged on my first visit! Hell, I didn't even think I was the marrying type and had never thought much about it.That said, I lasted less than a week...

Hope you have the same luck, Johnny!

Wife's visa journey:

I see what you mean, guys, but still...

Since Johnny is talking about his Plan B also, it seems a little bit too early. Knowing each other and talking on the internet before you meet each other in person is a bit different, don't you think?

Plus, really, the padlock tradition is mostly for weddings - people engrave their names and the wedding date on the lock. As I said before, some couples do it without having the wedding, but it's pretty rare.

And yes, I'm pracmatic, so is my fiance. That's why we waited for 2 years before getting engaged. It's not like I'm saying that everybody should do that... just explaining why it seems kind of weird for me.
