Please, before any one even thinks of moving to the s' hole that is Florida, please reconsider. Our economy is in the toilet, unemployment is just under 12%, and our governor is controlled by the Tea Party. Its pretty fvcked up here right now.

Come for a great vacation, but do yourself a favor and go home.

Agree 100%. Although, I have thought to myself that IF he can get a job here (see: your point about unemployment near 12%) this would be a fairly decent starting point in America. The beach, warm weather, multicultural in many parts of the state. The buildings and trees certainly have more of the "look" of Morocco than most of the U.S.... but I don't know at the end of the day how much that matters, or if it's all just superficial. I think the fact that it's so spread out down here, a "driving area" as opposed to a "public transit/walking area" would be a negative. IMHO certain larger cities provide more of than neighborhood feel where you can walk down to a nearby cafe and actually recognize some familiar faces more than Florida, which is so spread out.

ok you guys, sorry for being so specific with Florida. I was not thinking about politics and economy, just more atmosphere. It was just an idea, there are other coastal states that might feel more like home with MORE sunshine and less like Iowa City and more like Morocco. I know if I moved from even Virginia Beach to Iowa it would be a very hard transition. I live in Richmond now and I am glad that the ocean is just a two hour drive. Sunshine and nice weatherdoes make a difference. Long winters can be draining.

I think you have good points, actually, and I agree with you about the general atmosphere in Florida being more like where my SO is from than, say, Des Moines or Boston or something. I was just thinking out loud about my own love-hate relationship with Florida. Or maybe it's more of a like-hate relationship. Or even a little bit of just hate-hate sometimes. :) I completely agree with Staashi's points about the economy and the Gov, and I could rattle off several more negatives about Florida that make me question how long I could live there, besides the 6 months between April and October....but who knows? The houses are cheap, the beach is great, no one would give my SO and me a second look as we walk down the street... Millions of people choose to call it home. I just can't decide whether, for me, the pros make the cons worth it, or if I should just move somewhere else and, as Staashi said, leave it for vacations. Anyway, my intention wasn't to try to shoot down your idea so much as offer my own perspective on Florida.

I think location is going to be what you make of it. Honestly. My husband moved to the US - to WI in January. He had never seen snow and had never ever felt weather that was so cold. It was a shock and he was super depressed. About 18 months later we moved to Washington DC. There was a much bigger Moroccan community and we were away from all of our family so really on our own to make friends, deal with the kids, and build our life. (I should add we're both fairly young). This was good and bad for us. Ultimately we moved back to WI for a plethora of reasons. My husband struggled making WI home and making DC home - but ultimately he's at a point now where wherever we live is home.
