There are quite a few discussions about this on here and XE trade seems to be a popular choice. I used them and I think I only paid £15 in fees.

It usually depends on the amounts being sent. If you are planning a very large transfer, then often bank wires are better as they often have standard transfer charges for the wire transfer. If it is a smaller amount then Western Union has a pretty cheap method assuming you are willing to wait 48 hours to pick up the money. I send money to Ukraine with the 48 hour delayed pickup and it costs only 3%.

+1 for Western Union. You can do it from home online, it's fairly cheap, and it's easy.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

won't work for me because I actually need to go somewhere that has outlets in Russia where I can send banknotes.

How much money are we talking? Russia has WU outlets, don't they?

I use paypal and I pay next to nothing in fees. I sent $1k and the fee was less than $5. transferred it from my Aussie account to my Aussie Paypal account (free), then to my US paypal (around $5) and then to US bank account (free). The rates were up-to-date and you can pay the fee either when you send it, or after it's received.

Moneygram works like Western Union but has a few less agents. It is about half the price of Western Union. It can be done online at www.emoneygram.com
