They will confiscate them at Customs.

You should look to see if there is an Asian market where you live. I am lucky and have 2 pretty nice ones here.

i think its ok....everytime my fiance or my relatives go back to america we are always gving them a dried fish and no problem at all.and its been 20 years...

I think it all depends on who is manning the customs station. On my last trip, we had dried fish, and even told the customs agent. They scanned our bags, and sent us on our way....with our fish. The official rule is probably NO, but seems that some of us have gotten away with it (even while being up front with the customs agent).

Give it a try! But there are Filipino or Asian stores in the US esp in Cali although they are a bit pricey. The last time I went to the US (just this Dec) some of the "pasalubongs" of the Pinoys I flew with were confiscated.

I went home last April 2008 and Nov 201o and i brought with me 10 kls. of dried fish and squid and i had no problem. I had it in my checked in luggage ,,just make sure it won't smell but it's up to u if u are not comfortable then don't do it.

I think it all depends on who is manning the customs station.

If the U.S. customs agent is Filipino and he hasn't visited 'Pinas in a long time, he may confiscate all of your goodies for himself!

Depends on the port of entry. California and Hawaii are particularly harsh on agricultural products, and often, there is a second checkpoint other than Customs. If they are packaged and labelled you stand a better chance.

Drying is an effective means of food preservation because the "water activity" of the food (the hydration level, if you will) is lowered below the threshold where it can support pathogens. I'd be surprised if they raised an objection, but they may.

APHIS (part of USDA) is charged with regulating the import of food. I didn't see anything on their website regarding dried fish, but there is a phone number.
