Does anyone know when our petitions get FBI background checks? All I have been hearing is our petitions get adjudicated in 20 minutes tops, but at what point of the process do we get background checked and how long does it take?

Several times. The first time is when your file is opened for adjudication. The adjudicator puts you in the system as they review your file. It takes less than 1 minute provided you have a "clean" check. If there are some "hits" (name matches usually) you may be pulled for a "manual check", at any rate, it does not occur before the adjudication step.

This is usually not a multi step process. Your file sits in a box for months, it is opened, reviewed, the background check done and approved in about 20 minutes. Adjudicators handle 20-24 cases in a typical 10 hour (4 days per week) shift.

It is checked again at NVC abd again at the consulate and again for the AOS and again for the removal of conditions. Various depratments use different agencies, foreign and domestic to check your background.
