Skyping Algeria....

Since I've been back, the only really affordable way I've thought of to stay in touch with my husband is skype... I had a Sprint phone card, but for $16 I only had about a half hour to talk with my husband. So I thought, hey everyone uses Skype and loves it and the rates are pretty low, I'll try that... but it is HORRIBLE. I have a HORRIBLE connection... yesterday I only talked to my husband for about 15 minutes and the whole time was spent saying "what??... WHAT?? YOU'LL CALL ME AT WHAT TIME?? 8:00?? in Algeria or Boston??... ALGERIA or BOSTON??" Today the same thing happened, we talked for about one minute and then just said it's not worth it, we'll email each other later.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has this trouble with calling Algeria (or anywhere in North Africa) from Skype. I'm calling from my comptuer to his cell phone. I'm hoping when he gets to the cyber café later on tonight and we can talk computer to computer it will be better... and also FREE.

I'm also curious if anyone has found an affordable way to keep in touch with SO in the ME/NA... that actually works and you can actually talk to and hear your SO and have a normal conversation. Please help. Help help help.

I don't know if Mass. or Boston have STI phone cards. I buy a Michigan STI plus phone card here and I get 49 mins. for $5 to Egypt. Most of the time the connection is excellent. Once in a great while I'll get a crappy connection. I've never used Skype but I have a good friend whose fiance is in Egypt and she uses Skype to call him all the time. She gets a good connection.

I don't skype with yacine... but you should check out

www.ppoutlet.com

I've found SPC Gold Phone card to be the best, in all my time in Calling.

They have $2.50 cards, $5 and $10 and $20

I think the 2.50 cards get you about 25 minutes

and $5 cards get you close to 50 minutes

BTW - If you sign up and buy some, my login name is iceyspots so you can say that I referred you :)

Algeria's calling can range from about 6 cents to 12 cents...

But for the most part I've found that the vast majority of 6 cent cards have huge connection fees..

Read the fine print!

I am trying to find out more information on a phone that as long as we have highspeed interent that we can use this phone and call anywhere in the country as long as they have the same phone. I was talking to this gentleman and told him about my recent marriage and he asked how we communicated and I told him email, IM and I call him twice a day or more and i pay 22.9 cents a minute. He set up a meeting with me tomorrow to explain it to me. AS soon as I find out all the particulars I will share what I learn. I was really intrested when he said it is only$30 a month unlimited.

Hmmm that sounds a lot of the Freebox that they have in France.... you get high speed internet, cable television, and a phoneline with free phone calls to other landlines in france AND landlines and cell phones in the US.... how they do this for 30 euros a month i have NO IDEA, but it is fabulous...

i'll be very interested to hear what you find out...

Noura

I am with you on that one Noura...I used to love it when Jamal was in Morocco and now he enjoys same when talking to his family and friends...IDT has also some amazing rates calling Spain...as Jamal has so many friends there...What I like about the card is that it is both economical as well as reliable and you can have a print out of calls made including dates, numbers and time spent...so I swear by IDT

I use www.speedypins.com. Just choose where you are calling from and to and they suggest calling cards for you. You buy them on line and they give you the PIN immediately. I buy the "Safari" card for Algeria. Fabulous.

oh i forgot... samir uses voipbuster to call me for free .... he can use the pc to call my home phone. its like yahoo and you make an id and get 300 free mins a week. the connection was good. we cant call there tho with it for some reason. you can make several screen names and if the 300 mins runs out, log on with a different screen name. :)

I am getting almost 2 hours to an Algerian cell with the Safari cards I buy on speedypins. They do round up to the nearest three minutes, so if you make alot of short calls it burns through it faster, but still...great rates.
