Well, I'm living with my wife in China. I received a jury summons back in the states. We plan on returning to the US once she has her interview in March, but the kicker is the summons is before her interview. I'm just thinking should I ask for excuse, or tell them I'm no longer a resident. We're planning on returning to the same county. Does anyone know if telling them I'm no longer a resident will affect our CR-1? We filed through USCIS, and not DCF (I think). So... hmm. I've been out of the states for over a year (more like 3). We began our application in LATE 2009. I know it asks about domicile, and that is what I am concerned with. I still get my mail there, and it is the 'domicile'we intend to return to. So... GRR, what to do?

Getting jury duty deferred is usually no big deal--look on the summons and in almost every case it will tell you how to contact them to defer.

Call the Clerk of Court in the county and tell them you are overseas and they will defer you. It's not a big deal.

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

It was deferred last year... they said only once, according to my mother (She was nice enough to call for me since work and time zones make it a ###### to call)

You should call , when the clerk's office is open, and

tell them you are out of the country for a few months, will return - ask to be put 'in the next round'.

Don't have yer Mum call - YOU call.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yeah I agree..this is a new year, so you should be able to defer it until later this year. That is what happened to me....actually I was deployed and got back near the end of the month...I called and they just asked me what month I would like to do it...it had to be before the end of the year. You should have no issues getting it deferred since you are not in the country right now.

How would you even know about this if you reside in China?

If I lived in China, I had other things on my mind than worrying about jury summons. Throw it away.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Well, I called the Court. Wonderful Eugene only has a recorded message with no options. Anyhow, I called back to the court information. The lady there suggested that I send back the form that I am no longer a resident of that county  My wife's interview is two weeks after the date for the summons. So if I send it back, will this affect the domicile? We intend to move back to that address together, but I am not there now. Now I am at a loss...

How long have you been gone? Most likely you arent a resident of that county....

Also, the residency and domicile are 2 separate issues. I bet this doesnt even come up at the interview. How would they know about it unless you tell them?

Chick it in the trash. Don't even bother. I 'have a friend' who has been doing this for 25 years. You know, they can't even prove you ever received it unless it is sent certified mail or signature required....
