We are 2 months into the I-130 Process.. My wife has all the original documents, translation and all are apostled. I was wondering how soon she can obtain police document.. It takes about 30 days for mail to arrive from Georgia to the US.. I wanted to have all documents here and ready to go.. I just didn't know how soon she could make the police document.....

Just make sure she doesnt obtain it too soon if it has a short validity period...

When putting the packet together don't you want to have it prepared before??

If I wait for NVC stage it takes 30 days for her mail to come express

That would be nice.. but think if you request a police report anything can happen between now and the next 5 months when you complete the NVC Stage. You want the documents to be dated as close to the processing of the particular documents. If there were not such requirements then we could have all the forms prepared weeks, months before the case is completed.

Come on folks...this is also simple.

1) Check to see how long it is valid. In our case, Costa Rica police certificates are good for 90 days. Mexico doesn't issue them, so we only need one.

2) Also check to see how long it takes to be issued--on the spot in CR.

3) How long does it take to get it from your home country to the US. A couple of days in our case using FedEx or UPS or DHL.

So, knowing all that, we will get the certificate when we get the NOA2--no muss, no fuss, and very little risk it will expire, and if it does, the embassy in CR has already told us not to worry--even if it expires we can scurry into San Jose to get it reissued and they will reschedule as soon as possible.

Why ask the folks here who all have different experiences from different countries when you can just make a couple of calls in your home country and get everything you need.

I see one person who's confused as to the PURPOSE of this site..! Hey it's to ask and be advised and so he's given the information since that is what the poster did - he understood. The question was NOT when it expires question is is it tooo soon.. and just in case you dont know.. it's not advised to get a police report est. 5 months before you get to that stage. SMH

I sort of agree with magical although there are more tactful ways of putting it. I did some research on Georgia and could not find how long their certificates are valid for but if you are in Tbilisi you can obtain it on the spot or by mail it takes about 5 days ( here is the link http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_4881.html?cid=3566#docs ). The embassy webpage was a joke so I would have my spouse call the police center and ask them about validity. If it's short (3 months) wait until approval is super close. If it's a year (as it was for Colombia) then go ahead and get it now if you desire. Good luck to you. You can also ask the question in any Georgia forum and don't forget to use the state.gov and the local consulate websites, they are full of answers and links.

OK--so I wasn't very polite--I stand corrected, and chastised--sorry folks--didn't mean to offend, but what works in Colombia may not work in Brazil which may not work in Georgia or CR.

I really am sorry--didn't mean to step on toes.

And Ricardo, the five month thing is kind of an urban myth, isn't it ???

it's not written and if it was said many times before yes it'll be a myth. If they can get a PCC a month prior to the NVC and fly thru then that would be kool.... but it's best when at the nvc state.. guess would make for a earier transition at the embassy/consulate... but as long as it's not expired thought.

keep in mind that anything an happen from the time it's issued and accepted by the NVC.

What are you talking about? The NOA2 is the approval....so basically I didnt have my wife get any clearances until after we were done with the USCIS.
