A friend of mine had her interview in January and was approved. She got her visa in her passport and moved here permanently on Thursday. She was wondering if she has to go into social security and apply for her card or will they automatically send it to her in the mail.

Please let me know so I can pass the info on to her.

Thanks,

Melliemel

If she came in with a K-1 she will have to get it herself. If she came in with a CR-1 and indicated she would like a SS card then it will be mailed soon.

What type of visa did she come in on??? if it was a cr-1/ir-1 and she checked the box on the ds-230 theoretically it should arrive in her mailbox-BUT many times it dioes not!! If after 10-14 BUSINESS days no SSN card, then download the form at ssa.gov (just in case)head down to the local SSN office with passport/birth cert and inquire about its status

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Checking off the box on the DS-230 is hit or miss, no guarantee it will arrive on its' own.

Not yet, my husband works 6 days a week and the office is a ways away from where we are.

We have plans to try and go there in about two weeks, weather dependant of course.

I found time and went to the office.

I talked to the guard in there as he was helping get people organized, he said that I didnt have to wait in line, took all my stuff and sent it to the counter.

The lady walked away with my papers and ID and did a bunch of stuff.

45 mins later she called me up and told me that I should have the card in two weeks by mail, and that I was done there.

Glad about not having to wait in line, the room was PACKED.

Lol.. Im lucky, the SSN office near me is NEVER busy, I walked in and out in 10 min.. :)

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.
