Little about me:

I came to this country thirty five years ago with a permanent green card. I became USC about six years ago. I did not notify SSA about my citizenship status.

I was browsing VJ and came across the below for those who become USC.

My question:

Next week will be the sixth month that I sent F129I form. Do you think that not notifying SSA when I became USC can delay the approval or denial for the K-1 visa petition? Maybe they are having problem confirming my citizenship status with the SSA.

I like to hear from the expert.

The time frame for Noa2 is currently 6 months or more right now. You just have a long wait is all because VSC was horribly backlogged. It seems to be moving a little more as of late tho.

But how about my question? do you have any input on the question about notifying SSA?

There are other ways to verify your citizenship, and they will run you through all those checks. I imagine you sent a copy of your citizenship certificate and passport?

That should be ok. However, on the next convenient day I would to down to the nearest SSN office and notify them.

You are fine, does not matter if you didn't update your SSN status. You used your US citizen passport and certificate.

SSN update is for work and tax purposes. So that you are treated as a US citizen and not a LPR.

It's irrelevant for immigration purposes, like totally. Still envy you for your permanent Green Card. Too bad you had to turn that in, isn't it!

In any case, eventually you would want to stop by at the SSA, slap your passport, accompanied by a filled-out SS-5 form (do it online), on the counter, and let them update their records. If you pick a good time, this can be a 5-minute gig.
