Hi,

I noticed from reading all the threads that the first thing they ask for at the interview is your Passport. My question is do you get the passport back at the end of your interview or they keep it????????

Of course they are not going to claim your passport for themselves. If your visa is approved, I've heard they keep it and mail it with your visa (when it's ready) to you later, or simply as you to come back and pick them up. If you get a visa on the spot, that same day, you should have your passport as well.

Sorry I did not check to confirm you are referring to Naturalization

they don't keep it. it's just for ID and maybe to check your travel dates, the ones you mentioned on the form.

So, if some of my travel dates are in my expired passport, then you suggest I bring my expired passport and current one?

Because in Brazil they recently switched the passport style, both my passports (Brazilian) have different numbers and different colors...

I would just bring both your expired and current passports. Better to have them handy in case you're asked for it.

I have one that is expired and one that is current. Both have different passport numbers and one is a biometric design and the expired is the conventional one. Most of my travel dates are contained in the expired one.

Yep if you still have your expired Passports..bring them to your interveiw also..just in case the interveiwer officer wants to check on dates ect....he/she will return your passports once finished with them after the interveiw.

Wife had to, like a test to see if you can copy your exit and entry dates from both your expired and current passport for the N-400. Do that to learn if you have not exceeded the limits outside of the USA while as a LPR. Her paranoid IO checked those dates, even though she was only out of the country for a total of 3 1/2 weeks. And our dates were correct.

Those that do not have a current passport simply can tell their IO, they didn't renew it, and therefore never left the country. But best to be honest on this as they can check that.

You're required to bring ALL previous passports, expired or not. The document checklist that comes with your interview appointment letter is explicit about that. But likely they will only look at the current one.

Cast your cares on Jesus, because He cares for you.

My IO said to me, "may I see all your passports for the last 3 years please". I said I have 3, however the current one I received in 2007, and his response was, "well that is the only one I need to see". But that was my experience...

In that case I think it depends to a large extent on the IO that interviews you. You never know how thorough the IO might be, so be prepared. Check out the link below and be sure to read the part that says "Have you traveled outside the United States since becoming a permanent resident?"
