Yeah, you need to pay duty on Japanese made cars. The VIN number denotes the point of mfg. Ie JN1CAXXXXX is a Japanese car imported into Canada. Remember, not all Hondas, Toyotas etc are made in Japan.

That J means DUTY. It is a small ammount.

When I imported my Maxima, as the USC returning, I was asked how long have I been in Canada? I said Oh, I dunno.. 40 years.. he went pfft. and didnt charge me the duty. Its only like 1% of the Kelly blue book value. So 10K = 100.00 Not a big deal.

question...if you car isn't duty exempt, would they only collect duty at the border? or is it when you change over the registration? only asking as they didn't ask for anything relating to the car or my dogs when i crossed. (i keep telling the dogs to stay low as they are illegal ;) )

Actually, the dogs are only illegal if they don't have their rabies vaccinations.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

It is collected at the POE. If you didn't have the money, they would have had you place it in a bonded warehouse until you did have the money. ...

However, in your case, they probably chose not to collect it...

In the US, CBP's focus is security, not revenue collection.... so they let a lot of duty slide when it's a relatively small amount (less than $1,000 or so) and it's an individual paying... They would rather put their resources out in primary and secondary looking out for bad guys than having officers sitting in secondary filling out reams of paperwork to collect a few hundred bucks in duty...

In Canada, it's a little more the opposite...

I entered US in July with my 1,5 year old Mazda 3 made in Japan, and they charged me over $500.00 in duty fees. Apparently it is 2% of the value of the car. I was in a bit of a shock as I didn't expect to have to pay any duty, but eventually got over it, paid and moved on.

My case was a little different my car came in before me and the border said just to register it when my husband reaches the destination. This was last May. I arrived months later and ruling changed. Car was in my name. Had to pay an importer more $$ and the 2.5 duty. Car was foreign made, but sold in US and Canada so conformed. Charging is the default ruling.
