I know this is a silly simple question, but I ask anyway. My fiancee and I will marry in Beijing in March, and, I want to send her some money to use to book our wedding party and pay for my wedding shirt. But I would also like to keep a record of the money transfer. For record keeping and evidence purposes, which is best:

1. Bank draft from my bank with her name on it, or

2. Wire transfer via MoneyGram, or

3. Wire transfer direct to her credit card?

I am the USC.

Thanks.

I would go with xoom.com send it and you can print all of the receipts has all the information the amount the names and such. Easy to set up an account and relatively inexpensive. You can use your bank account or a credit card for the transactions.

I've checked out Xoom and it doesn't have China in the drop down window for "Please select a country to begin"

Check your bank if they offer remittance service. I use Wells Fargo to send money to Agricultural Bank of China for free. she would need an account with ABC. Can send up to $1000/day for a fee of $0 - $12, depending on your type of account. can walk into the bank to send it or do it online. They keep a record of your remittances for you. just another option, which worked great for us.

Yep, no dropdown for China. I used Compass bank wire transfer several times and used the receipts as evidence but it is a little costly, $45 dollars for my bank to initiate the transfer then another $15 is taken from the bank that actually does the transfer to the destination bank in China. I was not hit with the $15 fee on the first two wire transfers but the last one in November it was taken out.

I have been using Western Union for a couple of years. I get a paper receipt that I email a copy of to my wife. The Western Union fee has been $14.

The money sent was one of the question asked twice, at my wife's Interview in December 2009. I believe the Interviewer did not see the receipt of the first time I sent money, by my bank wire transfer. For the purpose for our next Interview, I have made better copies and logs of money sent.

Thanks for all the replies. I will check with my bank to see if they can wire xfer to China. Then I will go from there. MoneyGram from WalMart is another option I will explore.

Just get a Bank of America Visa or Mastercard, have them give you secondary card with fiance name on it, send her the card and then she can take cash advance with no fee at China Construction Bank ATM's. 2000RMB daily withdraw limit which can be raised with just a phone call to bank. This how I paid for our wedding, called BoA, told them to uncap daily withdraw, wife 10 minutes later went to ATM, withdrew 40,000RMB, paid no fees. She had to make 10 seperate transactions because the machine she was at only allowed 4000 at a time, but since no fees was no big deal.

The only catch in the system is if you don't pay off your cards each month, cash advance interest rates out of this world. If you pay off card each month, its basically a free way to transfer money and you get the maximum exchange rate.

xoom.com gave up on China new business about 6 months ago. I was p|ssed, too.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Thanks.

1. study the clearing time before choosing this route. 30/60/90 days used to be the norm.

2. never use it, only use Western Union - I've transferred thousands via Western Union - limited to 4999.99 each transaction - but I can send 2 and 3 transactions a day, at my convenient time (after 7 PM local time, when I'm done for the day)

3. You prolly mean direct to her bank stuff (Chinese call it a TT , or Telephonic Transfer, same as wire transfer here) - suggest you study the fees and turn around time at yer bank. If it makes sense for 20K via a TT, with 50 bucks in fees, 3 days turnaround, then all win.

My wife has a paypal debit mastercard on one of my business paypal accounts - is a hassle when she needs more than the daily limit, but can get much $$ via any atm machine, so the hassle is not SO bad.

Is other deals with USA banks and China banks - where is no fee for atm usage in China - check out who's who and what's what - then get ATM cards on accounts at those USA banks...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I decided to go with Western Union as I have no bank account at any of the banks mentioned.

It was easy for me, and my fiancee had no problem picking up the cash.

$14 fee for me. Western Union, quick and easy. Just the way I like it.

Thanks for the Replies.

I used Moneygram.com. It was easy and I could use it anytime. I could send money to my wife at 1 o'clock in the morning. And the best part was that Moneygram kept a history of all transfer. So when my wife's interview time came about, I logged into the site and printed the 8 transfer receipt and FedEx them to her along with other supporting documents. So I recommend using Moneygram. Truth be told, every money transfer service will give you a receipt. You just have to keep the receipt and keep track of them. Save 'em on a folder. Scan 'em into a PDF file and email them to yourself. Good luck and cong xi ni.
