Canadian Passport renewal

Hi everyone,

I have a question about renewing my Canadian Passport. I`m in Canada for Christmas and will go back home to Texas on January 11th. My passport is going to expire in May 2011.

I wanted to wait in February to renew it from USA but someone told me that I could not enter USA in January since my passport will expire in less than 6 months.

I have my Green Card so I thought I would not have any problem.

Does someone know if I really need to renew it now? I am scared that I won`t get it on time in January with the Holidays coming...

Thank you all for your help!

Have Happy Holidays!

You should be fine reentering the US in Jan - it's your GC that is the main piece of identification - only occassionally do they also ask for the passport (unless you're flying) but being within 6 months of renewal should not cause a problem. The 6 month issue is more for a traveller then someone who is a perm, resident of the US - you have the GC to prove it :)

You can go ahead and renew while your home though if you want - the Cdn office will return it to you immediately if you still need the old one.

Here's a link to my review from last July - mine was within 6 mons so I decided to renew while I was back home

Yes, since you are a permenant resident, you won't have any issues. If you were travelling to a country though to visit and you weren't a permenant resident then the 6 months thing would be an issue...

Canadians are exempt from the six month rule and need only have a passport valid for their intended period of stay. Link

But that is a moot point because, as the others say, CBP goes by the validity of your GC, not your passport.

  • 3 months later...

Actually I am in a simular situation. I am going to Canada April 1st and I would like to renew my passport while I am there. The only thing is I am in the middle of removing my conditions ROC on my green card. I have a letter extending my green card for 1 year. Will this be an issue? Maybe I should stop at the boarding as I am driving and make sure before I cross.

Are you renewing your passport in person? You can request an expedite while you're there, and pick it up before you leave. If you're not getting the expedite then make sure to keep your old passport, just in case. At the border you just present your GC with your extension letter. I've never had them ask to see my passport at the land border. They just want to see the GC.
