Have we gotten lazy?

I have read a million posts on this site, and here in the PI regional forum, there seem to be more SOs in the Philippines handling their own paperwork, rather than their kano counterparts. I don't know...maybe it's just me, but I think that our kano bretheren have gotten lazy. The paperwork is a maze of chaos for even a well educated American to fill out, let alone leaving it to a nervous/anxious Filipina who can hardly understand the language, let alone read, and write it. I feel for these young ladies(and some gents) that are left to fend for themselves, instead of having her/his American SO by their side helping every step of the way.

I filled everything out for my wife, made sure it was right before I sent off for her signatures, and have already put together her interview package, so she doesn't have anything to sweat other than going to the interview, and coming home with the pink, or whatever color slip they hand out now. I've asked my fair share of questions along the way, and will probably have more, but I think that the answers are easier to understand from kano to kano.

Nuff said. I just wanted to get this off my chest. It's been bugging me for a while now. Thank you on behalf of the Pinay SOs who ask and receive such awesome answers fromo you VJers. Your help is immeasurable to these young ladies and gents.

Peace and Happy Holidays!

Perhaps it is because most USCs have to work 9-5 and are tired to do immigration paperwork at the end of the day.

While Filipino SOs are in the Philippines, many without employment, and have more free time to work on their petitions.

Just my thoughts. :)

My wife is quite literate in English and wanted to be part of the whole process. We both worked on all of the paperwork and double-chacked each other's work.

i feel yah, Filipinawife0210. I pretty much did all the work. Maybe hubby just got used to me doing all the paperwork with everything that involves our family. Sometimes, he does the tax forms and all, after I remind him for the Nth time! :bonk: I can boss him around though and ask him whatever I need to process certain papers. Trust me, it irritates the hell out of me sometimes that I have to be responsible one (okay, venting now) but I'd rather use my energy on doing something than nagging him. :D

As much as I'd hate to say this, he's just really such a baby!! He's lucky I'm more proficient than him in English. LOL

In our case, we both worked on our paperworks but I believe that he did his part really well as in he taped all the receipts, he sent me back all the cards that I gave him for my interview in the US Embassy including the e-cards. He even went to Costco and have all our photos printed and then sent those to me even though i told him I could do that in the Philippines. I can say that he was really organized even during our AOS interview. That's what the interviewer told us, he's a good bookkeeper. He has different folders for each document. He sent me labels for my interview. I think with this kind of paperworks both of you really have to work but I can understand also that some do not have enough time to do some things. Helping each other would be the best thing to do :)

speak for yourself. I did ALL the paperwork and went with her to pick up all the supporting documents. Just cuz your kano and a few others are lazy doesn't mean we all are ;) It probably depends on the type of guy though. I am more of a control type person I feel more comfortable knowing I did it and i'm used to filling out paperwork forms and she's not. All she had to do was sign :)

It was equal work for us both.. he did the k1 packet and i prepared for my medical and interview, he's also paying for all the things paid in the US, and I am paying for my medical and interview.. but I work and am quite literate and happy to do my own share of work, I don't need him to do everything for me! Kudos to the guys who do all the work. :)

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Thanks for all of your replies.

First and foremost, a 9-5 job is nothing. I am in the military, and have been on 12+ hour shifts more than I care to count. However, I have never been too tired after a normal 10 or 11 hour day to get things done when it came to my wife's petition. I basically put everything on a timeline of my own, and would remind my wife when she needed to go to NSO, or NBI, or whatever. I know that a good number of the pinay SOs on here are just researching, but I feel total pity for the folks that come to us for advice because they are panicking, rather than having their lazy a$$ed USC SO do the research for them. Although I know that with the time diffference, if they return from am interview with an RFE, they will come here first because their hubby/wife may be sleeping.

Anyways, thanks again to all for your replies.

That's a bit presumptuous. Unless a beneficiary has specifically said that they are doing all the paperwork on their own, there's no way to tell how involved the petitioner is with preparing the paperwork. The fact that many beneficiaries are getting involved and asking questions here is a good thing, IMO. That means they are less likely to be in-the-dark about the process.

I was working for a Canadian immigration consulting firm when I met my husband, so I got quite a bit of training when it comes to preparing documentation, and the importance of completing forms with the correct information. Initially we hired a lawyer (that was before we found out about this site); but after being royally screwed out of some $2500, Rick and I turned to our own smarts (and the infinite wealth of knowledge here on VJ) to do our own paperwork. I'm pretty OC when it comes to documentation. lol It drove my husband crazy for a while because I would sometimes sweat the little things, but here we are...together in Tallahassee, with a new baby, and about to celebrate our second wedding anniversary next month. :D

Also, Rick works long hours, so it was up to me to get most of our paperwork done (I got a lot of great advice here). The man is anything but lazy...he can barely sit still in one place. :P He's always doing something. lol That drives me nuts sometimes, but hell...do I ever love him. :)

Be smart, have a plan, and hang on to the people you love. - Chris Gardner

Feeling full of yourself today huh?! Having some low self esteem issues lately? A 9-5 "JOB" may be nothing to you but it is to others. Why are you puffing up your chest about a 12+ hours work shift?

If that's your measure? Then how about try owning a business like my husband does where, it becomes a lifestyle and instead of a job. Don't judge somebody until you walk in their shoes.

There's more to life than just punchin' a clock.

Well...la-dee-daah! Good for you for being such a GOOD reminder (director). My husband and I worked together...we each did our own part and cooperated throughout the process.

I didn't need to be "reminded" bcoz I could handle the things that I needed to do on my end. VJ served as a great resource for both of us.

I think you should compare apples to apples. Apparently your wife was incapable of being much help throughout the visa process.

That doesn't mean those of us "Filipinas" that are capable, are married to "LAZY" spouses.

You need to put things in proper prespective!

Understood  But, it seems that there are quite a bit of beneficiaries who are trying to fill out forms that are required at the USCIS stage of the process. I can wholly understand about being panicked at the interview stage, or even the pre-interview stage, just to make sure everything is filled out correctly. But, if the petitioner was as involved as they should be, the paperwork should be squared away ahead of time. It just seems that a lot of beneficiaries are left hanging once the package leaves US soil, and heads for where ever it's going. Asking questions is ALWAYS welcomed, and recommended. Especially on this site. As I stated the advice given from the seasoned VJ veterans is priceless compared to even an immigration lawyers advice.
