Well...wow its been a while since I have posted. Hope all is well with everyone and I will be activly back on VJ soon.. things have been so busy that I havent found time for anything...other than getting strep from the kids at school. Othmane is here and we are doing good. lots of adjusting going on, first being the cold. :)

but day by day.

ANYHOW

quick question.

we are going on tuesday to apply for the SSN. Once we apply, do they give you a reciept with the ss number on it before your card is sent to you in the mail? He needs the SSN as soon as possible and im wondering if they can give you the number before recieving the actual card.

how was the applying for SSN experience for you all? we are bring his passport and birth certificate..and the forms from here. hope thats all right.

thanks, Sarah

Sarah,

The SSN was the easiest thing of all. We just brought his passport, his Moroccan ID, and his birth certificate. They typed everything in the computer and handed us a slip of paper saying it would take a week or two to get it in the mail. You do not get the number before getting the card. :(

Best wishes!

Yes...I think all they really looked at, if I remember correctly, was his passport and his I-94 within it.

We had my husband's passport and our marriage certificate, and I also think all they looked at was the passport.

Since you're within the 90 days of the visa, the I-94 and visa should be all they need. When did he arrive in the US? If it's been less than 2 weeks, he's probably not in the system yet, so you'd need to fill out more forms, which would take a little longer. But, if he's in the system, it will come relatively quickly.

What do you need it quickly for? To get married? I know they asked us for my husband's but when we explained that he was here on a K-1, they said it was ok.

Abderrafie spent about 5 minutes in the SS office. He brought the form in already filled out, and his passport and birth certificate, waited 3 minutes to be called to the counter and was finished two minutes later. He had brought along the paper they show here on VJ to let the SS people know K1'ers are eligible, but it was unnecessary.

The SS# arrived in the mail less than a week later.

Hey Sarah, long time no see!

We only needed to show Maj's passport for the Social Security number. Because they messed up entering him into the computer at JFK, we had to wait another month to get the number, but most people get it in a week.

As Rahma said, you actually don't need the SSN to get married; there's a space on the application in MA where you can write why he doesn't have one.

When we went to get Abdel's SS# they told us he would get it in the mail in a week to 10 days, but if we needed it sooner we could come back in two days and they would give it to us there. We didn't need it that bad so we didn't go back, but he had it within the 10 days. I think we could have gone back the next day, but that was the day before Thanksgiving, so 2 days was the Friday after Thanksgiving. I would say depending on where you live, go early.

We went mid morning and waited well over an hour. When I went to change my name on mine, I got there about 15 minutes before they opened and there was already a long enough line to fill the seats inside and have people left standing.
