Hi everyone,

I've spent a lot of time reading through the forums over the past month and feel like I've got a good understanding of the CR1 visa but I'm confused right now about the NVC process. Our NOA2 arrived in the mail over a week ago. My USC husband and I planned to use the NVC Automated Voice Response Service in order to get our case number and get moving on the NVC shortcuts but here's the thing: it's been eight days of phoning and we've yet to have a case number assigned. I'm looking at the timelines of some of the forum posters here who also received their NOA2s in the past couple of weeks AND most of you got your case numbers within a few days. What are we doing wrong?! It took over 5 months for our NOA2 and we're anxious to get through the NVC process as quickly as possible, especially since I'll be interviewing in Montreal... I understand I could be looking at a five month wait for an interview. Sigh. We thought we would get through the Visa process in 7-8 months, and here we're looking at close to a year possibly.

Speak to a operator. They can give you the case number from your USCIS receipt number. My cases are still not in the AVR system and ive already submitted both my AOS docs & DS230's. I think the AVR is not too reliable.

It can take a few weeks to get the case number. Keep calling though, you'll get it eventually

I don't know anyone going through Montreal who got through the visa process in 8 months. People like us, it takes 8 - 14 months to get through. Sorry but I'm not trying to give you unrealistic timelines. We got through in 10 months back when there wasn't a 5 month wait for interviews. They are currently scheduling interviews for those with complete cases in July

Good luck

Don't rely on the AVR, speak with a live agent.

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

AVR messages typically lag the actual status of your case. Keep trying to get through to an operator. If you are planning on opting in for electronic processing this thread may help.

Newbie,

How were you able to post your NVC documents without a case number?

Another question: I foolishly sold my home (and did not renew a year-long work contract) back in June (after we sent off the 1130) thinking I'd be joining my husband in the States by December/January. I'm currently living with my mother--and barely employed (working as a freelance editor). Do I need to let the NVC know about my address change? How do I do this? Will having a different address in the second package confuse things?

I'm debating now as to whether I should move out of my mom's place and rent a studio apartment as I can't imagine living another 6 months or longer in her home.

Why is Montreal so backlogged?

Thanks all.

I was able to get through to a "human" this morning, but she informed me that my case had not yet been received at NVC. She asked my CIS approval date, and when I told her it was the 23rd, she asked: "THIS MONTH"??? She told me to call back in 2 weeks as it "normally" takes 20 business days to reach their system. Of course, after reading all the posts about being PRO-active with NVC, I will call tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow until I get the Case #. (if the speed dial doesn't wear out on my phone first).

I called yesterday. Took a lot of redials & finally got through to someone. Just push "0" (zero) to get an operator. They told me my NVC number & when it left for the consulate.

Good Luck on the rest of your journey!
