Turkey day panic!!!

Ok... So this is my first US thanksgiving. And true to form, my family just threw me in the deep end and decided that thanksgiving should be at my house. I didnt celebrate canadian thanksgiving because I stayed with my mom while waiting for my visa process, and for religious reasons she does not observe thanksgiving.

So... what I need from you my fellow VJ friends... are RECIPES!!

My sister in law is making the turkey and stuffing, and Im making everything else. When I ask what they want with it.. I get "I dunno, thanksgiving stuff, whatever you want". GRRRR

What are your favourites for Thanksgiving.. and pls share recipes.

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

Pilsbury rolls! we do thos every year. They are really easy and fast too haha.

Green bean casserol with the crunchy things in it! not sure of a recipe for it cus my mom makes it.

Thanksgiving recipes and traditions can be pretty different depending on where you live in USA.

Here are some of my favorites: Corn bread, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and sweet potato-pecan casserole.

Good luck with all the cooking and Happy Thanksgiving!

Garlic Mashed potatoes! Just make normal mashed potatoes and add a little garlic powder to them (maybe like 1/2 tbsp?) for flavor.

I also LOVE turnip. You cut it into chunks and cook it like potatos (boil in water till soft) and once done mash them up with butter. You can also add some brown sugar to them if you want them a bit sweeter.

You can find the recipe for the green bean casserole on cambells website. Its just like a can of soup, green beans and french's french fried onions (though I'm not sure amounts on the last 2 things)

well last year i got asked to do the sweet potatoe dish so i came up with my own recipe. apparently it was a hit and dis now my signature holiday dish that i always have to make LOL.

4 lbs of sweet potatoes / yams peeled and cut into 1inch pieces

2/3 cup brown sugar. i use the really dark one.

5 tbsp of butter

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp nutmeg

pinch of ginger

or if you have all spice you can just do a tsp or two of that depending on your likes

2 cups of mini marshmellows

1/2 cup sliced almonds

the biggest pita is the slicing of the yams. make sure you have a good knife and get help from hubby :P my hands were killing me after that!

use a 13/9/2 pan and heat oven to 375.

combine everything except the yams mashmellows and almonds, into a saucepan.

bring to a boil stirring until mixed and sugar is dissolved. pour this over the potatoes toss to coat and cover with foil.

bake for 50 mins or so. bascially you want the potatoes to be tender and the syrup to be thick. baste a few times during this.

bring temp up to 500, and pour the nuts and marshemellows over the potatoes.

bake until marshmellows are melted and brown about 3 mins.

French's Green bean casserole - just so 'American thanksgiving-y'

Yummy Sweet potato casserole - my husband is in charge of making this each year...can be made ahead the day before and warmed up. If you've been to teh restaurant Ruth's Chris...this is darn close to their recipe

Mashed potatos do well with milk, butter and a package of Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix (as much as you like to taste)

I don't have any recipes - you got plenty of those! I just wanted to remind you to take it easy, and remember to enjoy the day! In our family, we split the menu up. My sister does the turkey and stuffing, and the rest of us bring different side dishes. Makes it less stressful for everyone.
