Passport Renewal: Catch-22?

I have a question about renewing my wife's passport, and I'm wondering if anybody out there has faced a similar situation?

My wife is Filipina. She now has one of the old maroon passports with her maiden name. When she renews her passport next year, she wants it to be in her married name, which is the name that will be on her green card, etc. The Philippine consulate no longer amends older passports and now issues only the new e-passport, which requires a personal appearance. The problem is that we would have to travel to San Francisco, which is very far away from where we live (northern Alaska) - it would cost us a minimum of $2,000 (RT for both of us) to make the trip, and I would have to take time off work, etc. So I am thinking it would be much easier and cheaper to renew while we are in the Philippines next summer. But if she has a round-trip plane ticket, then when she returns her new passport will have her married name which won't match the return portion of the round-trip plane ticket.

Will this be a problem? What's the solution? I could buy 2 OW tickets, but that's really expensive too! Her current passport is valid for a couple more years, so there's no immediate emergency, but sooner or later we'll have to renew it somehow.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Would the Philippine Consulate even renew a passport that is valid for a couple more years? Maybe not.

It would probably be best to renew while in the Philippines. If the name on return ticket doesn't match her new passport, she can always show her old passport and/or marriage certificate. It should not be a problem.

The Philippine consulates in the US have outreach programs where consulate officers travel to various cities they serve to assist in Philippine passports, marriage and birth records etc. They just were in Anchorage in October. Keep an eye on there website to see when they will be anchorage or a city nearer you so the travel costs are minimal.

Have them put the passport in her full name - first name old middle name maiden name new family name - basically her old name + her new family name. then it will match there will just be a new last name on the end :)
