wife's visa/greencard status

Hi,

So my wife passed her consulate interview and was able to enter the US last week. There's a visa in her passport saying that she has to enter the US by next April, and of course she's already here. But there's no separate greencard that she was issued (we took the IR1-CR1 route). Because it's been less than 2 years since we got married, it's a condtional greencard.

On our DS-230 we requested a social security number, but haven't heard back from the CIS. Maybe we should visit the actual social security office. But the weird thing is, we didn't get any other forms, just a stamp in her passport.

For health insurance, applying for colleges, etc. when it asks for her visa/alien registration card, social security number, what are we supposed to do?

Thanks

The I-551 stamp in her passport is her temporary green card. You should be able to go to the local SSA office and confirm they already have her in their system and if not that they can find her in the SAVE database so she can apply for a SSN.

Her physical Green card should arrive in a few weeks.

congrats. for the SS, some people are having luck and receiving it in the mail w/o having to go to the SS office physically (ie, right thru the ds230 checked box, like you did). others, like me, had to go to the SS office in person. since you already have the cr-1, you can just go to the office personally and get it much quicker than waiting for it in the mail. for health insurance, initially most insuyrances will accept her w/o an SS#, but will require one after a few weeks. so you can put her on initiaally. just make sure you get the SS ASAP, since that's gonna be the most useful. your cr-1 sticker is more than enuf to show proof for employment and all. good luck!

Another thing with the health insurance, you need a qualifying event to add someone to your health insurance and then you generally have a 30 day window. The most common ones are:

Marriage, Loss of existing coverage, birth of a child.

Some providers allow for Immigration to the US but it is far less common.

Without a qualifying event you will have to wait until your next open enrollment.

actually in my case, wife immigrating to the US qualified as a life-changing event and they let me add my wife. hopefully your insurance co. will also let you do the same...
