Hi!

I'm trying to decide on what luggage to buy. Samsonite is too expensive but very very durable and lasts for a long time. However, I'm on a low budget. I want something that will be cheap but sturdy. Maybe one of the local brands.

Fan ako ng Hawk Bags dahil matitibay talaga, at sister company nila ang Urban Luggage. Has anyone got experience with the cheaper models of Urban?

Another option that I'm looking at is Voyager. Mukha ring matitibay at magaganda ang designs.

Any experiences or advice from the people here?

Hindi ito pang one-time na gamit, because we'll also be traveling with just that luggage (20-25kgs) plus the carry-on-sized luggage (7-10kgs). Sa actual na byahe ko, I'll put the carry-on-sized luggage inside a balikbayan box together with other stuff, and have that plus the regular luggage as my check-in luggage, tapos backpack ko na ang talagang carry-on ko plus my wedding gown in a zip-up cloth bag kung papayagan nila.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

However, I'm still looking for a durable luggage that will last me for 5-10 years, because I expect for me and my hubby to be traveling quite often in the next months and in the next years (1-2x/year of that will be to the Philippines).

I'm still trying to decide between Urban and Voyager.

Cutie_Patootie, yung Urban mo ba, anong model number at magkano? Are they still in very good shape? I'm planning to get a medium-sized one for check-in and a small one for carry-on.

that's a no. pag-pasok mo ng pinto your first security check tapos on to the check in counters. now...kung meron mga check in counters that are empty/not being used, puwede mo gamitin to weigh your luggages. pero all the times i've flown out of that terminal, i've never once seen a counter that is not in use.

kung meron kayo kilala ng may tindahan ng bigas...see if you can borrow one of their big table top scales.

Buy a luggage weighing scale. I saw one at Handyman but they're cheaper on eBay and Dealextreme. I got mine on eBay for $15, shipping included. It has a 40-kg (~88 lbs) capacity and small so I carry it with me whenever I travel. It beats having to guess the weights of my luggages and does away with repacking in airports.

On luggages: If you can't find a good one, just buy a balikbayan box and a balikbayan box bag (P410 in Divisoria, P700+ in Greenhills, P1200+ at Ace Hardware and SM stores). Buy your luggages when you get to the US. There are a lot more sales. I usually buy my luggages when they're on sale at 70% off so I'm able to get 20", 26" and 29" pullmans for $15-$75. I have American Tourister, Ricardo, Atlantic, Samsonite, Roots, International Traveller, and Delsey pullmans and carry-ons that vary in age from 2-9 years old. The cheapest I bought (on sale as usual) was a 29" International traveller (polycarbonate) hard-sided pullman for $16.49 :).

You'll never find good sales for non-local luggages in the Philippines. Unfortunately, Philippine stores seem to place items on sale only when they're already damaged unlike in other countries where sale items are new and in excellent condition.

I'm not sure kung ano yung model number. It was their latest luggage that time, Novemeber '09.I got me the purple color because it was the edition of bright colors.

Actually, that luggage has been back in the PI, when my uncle visited me here, I sent him so many pasalubong to my family, puno yung luggage na yun, so yeah, Its a very good quality.

I spent like 3.8K Php for that, the features was digital lock which the TSA has key for it so they won't have to whack your luggage's lock once you reach the customs inspection in the US.

The measurement was the allowed measurement for airlines domestic and international, so I didn't have to worry about excess measurement.

have a safe trip and welcome to the US!

I don't think this is a good idea. There was this lady I read over the internet who bought herself these luxurious brand for luggages and purses to show off, but then when she arrived in the US, the customs officer had to stop her for bringing in the imitation to the US. So I think you know now what had happen.

So, I wouldn't suggest this.

Yeah, I agree with Cutie_Patootie. If you attempt to bring in counterfeit items, especially your luggage, be prepared to be stopped by U.S. Customs. I have friends who had only their items confiscated. They were lucky.

The risk is not worth the potential consequence, IMO.

Try going to a TJ Maxx or a Marshalls or a Tuesday Morning, I got a great deal on Samsonite set that has held up well for lots of trips.
