Hi

I will be going to the USA to see my girlfriend for 3 months, in an effort to see if we really do love each other and can make things work, i came back in October and will be going back in December :)

While i have been back we have been talking about what we would have to do, so i did a lot of searching and found this site, and i must say i'm glad i did, loads of great information here.

There are just 2 things that concern me about a K-1 visa, should we decide to marry, she is 54 and i am 32, and not sure what the medical is for, is it just physical or do they do mental tests as well? I ask this as i have suffered with depression for 4 years and i am concerned they could use that as a reason to deny any visa, if and when we file for it.

No, that will not be a problem. They will do an HIV blood test, take an X-ray to make sure you do not have TB, and make sure you've had certain vaccines. These vary by age--for my husband, who was 51 at the time, he only needed to have the chicken pox vaccine (or history), tetanus, and the MMR vaccine.

A big age difference is not a problem in and of itself. You just need to make sure you have pretty solid relationship evidence, particularly if you are going through one of the more demanding consulates. It's possible you'll be asked about it at the interview.

They do ask questions about your medical history. If you have any health issues then they just want to check that they are under control. For example, if you had diabetes they would want to know that you successfully controlled it with insulin, or whatever. The medicals do vary by country, in that different doctors are more or less thorough at completing the different parts of the medical. It might be that the depression has absolutely no affect on your medical, or it might be that they ask for a letter from your doctor saying that you're not a danger to yourself or others.
