how do you keep track fo what's going on with your visa application. we sent away the electronic notification form with our package. do we have to wait for them to send us an email or is there a website?

you dont need any sort of " electronic notification " forum.all you gotta do is check your package via the system you sent it with ( IE: DHL,Fedex,TNT,etc ) and then wait for your first notice of action,on that noa,they give you a code.you can use this website: https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/Dashboard.do to check your case status,and sign up for updates from the same page

I think OP means they sent away the G-1145 to be electronically notified of their NOA1.

As ygr said, you will get a number when they notify you and you can use that to check your status online. After you get your electronic notification, either through text or email, you will also get a hard copy in the mail.
