I'm from Toronto and I did not need to show anything to get mine done. I just told them it was for US immigration purposes and needed a Canada wide search. The embassy will want one done within a year of the interview so I went ahead and did it well in advance (have to get one too from out of country and hoping that one will come in the next few months).

Hope this helps.

My memory's fuzzy on this but I thought they usually wanted it within 6 months, not a year. No worries, if not, but might be something to double check.

When I did mine I waited for the Packet 3 since I knew I would be able to get mine within about an hour (Vancouver).

The latest that I've heard was one year, but if I made a mistake no worries.. it only took a few days - I'll do it again. The important thing was to get the ball rolling on my out of country check and while I was getting the fingerprints done for that, I put through the paperwork for the RCMP check at the same time.

heh, my memory's ####### and I did this in June 2005. It could very well -be- a year. I just remember others being told on here not to get it too soon or it might expire in a long wait for interview. Most K interview at that time were 1-3 months from returning the checklist and DS-230. I know Montreal has a longer wait time now.

And yes, the out of country ones take much longer so it's good you did that.

What I've heard was that the RCMP check (with fingerprints) was requested if you have a criminal record.

If not, you can go to your local police station (Ottawa for me) and ask for a nation wide criminal check which only take 2 min to do. As for the RCMP check with the finger prints, it can take 2-3 months before getting results. I did both. The RCMP check was done beginning of June, and I still have not got any results.

Ok - so do you need the RCMP check with fingerprints or not? I just went to my local police station and told them I needed a police check for immigration purposes... (I'm in Ontario). They took my $35.00 bucks and I got the report in the mail about 2 weeks later. Do I need RCMP check too? I have no criminal record, not even a speeding ticket :)

Help

I thought you needed it from the RCMP not the local police station -- I went to the RCMP and got it. Thought somewhere it says it needs the RCMP stamp on it.

When you do the local police station thing. They will search nation wide for criminal records under your name and date of birth (and maybe other things). If fingerprints are required, then it has to go through the RCMP, because local police dep don't do that and they will route you to them.

I think when some of the people in the forum say that they went to the RCMP to get their criminal record check, it might be because the RCMP have jurisdiction in their town and don't have a local police. So then the RCMP will basicaly do a name/DOB search, which will take a few min (or 2 weeks depending on where you go) and give you the results. As for the fingerprints, it takes 2-4 months to get results.

maybe someone who has done their interview can vouch for what needs to be done.

One has to ensure the check is CANADA WIDE. At one time it had to be completed by the RCMP or if in the Toronto area, the Commisionaires. But it seems the Canadian consulates have been taking local police as well, just ensure it states on the cert it is Canada wide!! Personally, if I had a RCMP detachment close by, I would use them

When I got mine doen back in 2004, the RCMP wanted some kind of proof I was using it for immigration, I just printed of a page from the internet. Others don't care for any proof!! Mine was free, some charge a fee. Some include a picture of you on the form, others don't!! Some give you the form back in minutes, some take days. Best to call ahead and ask.

Not sure how long it is valid for, have seen it posted on here stating 1 yr, but not sure who the source was. When in doubt email Mtl or Van. Keep in mind its a fairly easy document to obtain (normally) If you have ever had a criminal record, then one wil lrequire fingerprinting, and that can take awhile, sometimes up to 6 months!! I recall one persone writing a friendly note with the fingerprints and asking if al possible to speed it up, not sure if it worked or not. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Just to clarify so I don't confuse anyone.. I only got fingerprints because they were needed for the out of country check.

As far as I understand, the RCMP check is the safest way to ensure that it is Canada Wide.. so that's the route I went. I got the information about it being valid for one year from someone on here who typed out their consulate letter for me.
