Hi everyone,

I have been in USA for 2 months now and I didn't receive my SSN yet, even I marked on YES box in I864 form regarding the SSN.

I went to the Social Security Administration also a month ago and they told me that they can't see me on there system and she explained that it might be because I'm not there or they are still processing my papers.

I don't know what to do and should I wait another month or go apply for one ( if I applied for SSN now, it will mess any process if they are already finishing my papers ).

Thank you all for your time.

They took 2 months for us and we went last week and applied again. Also, look into making an appointment for the office because we had to wait an hour for anyone to see us and they wanted my husband's birth certificate, green card, and passport.

April 19, 2010 - NOA1 (documents received at Mexico City Embassy)

April 20, 2010 - NOA2 (received notice April 28, 2010, mailed April 27)

May 3, 2010 - Packet 3 sent (received May 27, 2010)

May 9, 2010 - I emailed them using the inquiry form asking for my case number

May 17, 2010 - received case number and link to Packet 3 by email

May 18, 2010 - sent Packet 3 to Ciudad Juarez

May 28, 2010 - called Ciudad Juarez to see if we had an appointment yet, they said wait 6-8 weeks :(

May 30, 2010 - I return to the US

June 8, 2010 - called and found out appointment date

June 16, 2010 - received Packet 4

July 6, 2010 - interview - Approved!

July 7, 2010 - pick up visa at DHL and POE to activate

July 29, 2010 - welcome letter received

August 1, 2010 - my husband comes home to me

August 13, 2010 - received Green Card

September 28, 2010 - never received Social Security Card, had to apply for it, arrived Sept. 28

finishing yer papers? what EVER are you talking about ? huh ?

what ?

in the meantime - if you've been in USA this long,

please go to the SSA office, bring yer passport,

fill out the application form

and when you talk to a SSA clerk, show VISA PAGE of passport,

ask clerk to look you up in the SAVE database in either VISA NAME or A#.

If , after 2 months, a clerk can't find you in the SAVE database, somethings wrong -

you'll need to 'get it fixed - see http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextchannel=1721c2ec0c7c8110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD&vgnextoid=1721c2ec0c7c8110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD

---

assumption - entry into USA on CR-1/IR-1 visa.

If you entered, really, on a K-3 visa - sorry, there's nothing to be done until you have greencard in hand.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

We seem to be running into a similar issue. On one of the interview papers handed to my wife at the consulate, it said she would receive her social security card within 3 weeks after arriving. It also said we're supposed to call if she doesn't receive it within 3 weeks. So we'll probably be making a trip down the local SSA office here shortly to see what the heck is up.

Of course we checked the option to be sent a card etc...

So maybe the SSA offices are having problems lately?

Anyway Somewhat of a follow up question:

What documents/document does my wife need to be able to start working?

I'm not sure if she has to wait for her green card, or if she can just use the stamp on her passport in the mean time.

I'm sure she'll need a valid SSA card, but I'm not sure what else will be required.

Edit: I need to update my time line - my bad.

Minimum -

I-551 stamp in the passport and

SSN

usually, the current version of the I-9 form has the latest and greatest 'documentation' requirements.

Definitely make another appointment or go down to the SSA office.

That is what happened to my husband too. From what I understood, the SSA couldn't find my husband in the system because his POE was JFK. JFK gets back logged sending the paperwork to Homeland Security so it takes a little bit to get them in the system.

SSA can look them up just like how Darnell says. That is how they found my husband. SSA screwed up my husband's name on his card because of having multiple last names. The name on the SS card HAS to match the green card! Get it changed if needed or you will have big trouble when you try to get a ID or Driver's license!

Oh yeah, the lady at the SSA said that homeland security needs to change the name to match what is on his SS card, NOT! It's the other way around!!:bonk:

Can I save you some pain? Calling is useless.

Please go in person to the local SSA office.
