Unemployment for I-129f?

Hi everyone!

My fiance (US citizen) and I (Japanese citizen) are busy getting our I-129f packet together and this site and forum have been invaluable to us, so thank you!!

My question is this:

My fiance was serving in the US military and stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged and sent back to America just a few days ago and is currently in the process of looking for a new job, but it looks like it will take a while before he can get anything decent. We really want to mail our I-129f packet as soon as possible, but will it be a problem at this stage that he is unemployed? I know that when it comes time for the affidavit of support, his finances will be important but he will (hopefully, fingers crossed) have a job by then and we will also get a co-sponser. Does the USCIS deny petitions because the US citizen is unemployed?

Any information you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am in the same boat. I am unemployed and would have to show affidavit of support. I think it states also that you can send your last year's Income Tax Return if you are self-employed which is what I will be doing, since I may be freelancing for a while. My last year's Tax Return was pretty good becuase of a lot of stocks that I cashed in to be travelling throughout this year. I hope that my bank accounts and investment portfolio will be enough to show that I can support us both. Does you fiance have enough savings to show he will be able to support you for a while though unemployed? In any case I will be asking for a co-sponsor if that is not enough or if uneployment is a problem. Anyone had any problems with this?

They do not even look at your finances until the interview stage. It will not have any bearing on the initial petition to apply.

When you get to the interview stage, as long as you have a co-sponsor which meets all the requirements it should not affect your petition.
