Criminal Checks

I have come across some information that I would like to share in this matter.

I went downtown and parked ( $10 ) and walked a couple blocks to the police station. I stood in line ( 20 minutes ) filled out my paperwork ( 5 min ) stood in another line ( 10 min ) and paid $30 to have a criminal check done.

At this time, I was advised that it would take 4 - 5 weeks before I recieved it in the mail.

I dont want to wait 4 - 5 weeks, so I looked at alternatives.

I found one. A private company would do the check for me for a fee of $50, with a 24 hour delivery time for an email copy, and a 2 week delivery for the hard copy in the mail.

Hmmm.. so I did more checking.

Lo and behold, the local RCMP will do it for free. Parking - free. Wait time .. 5 minutes.

Just a word of advice for those looking to have there criminal records done. I hope this post helps some people.

Good Luck !

Its not the same at all RCMP. Mine was free parking 5 min wait time and 40$ to walk out of the place with my certificate from them stamped signed and everything. OR I could have got it for free and waited 2 weeks to get it in the mail.

As a former employee of the RCMP (who used to run those checks) I can confirm it's different everywhere. Some places it's crazy expensive and a long wait, others are free and you get it quick. It just depends on the jurisdiction.

I also went to the local RCMP and got the criminal record check and the sex offender one as well for free. They also gave me other certified copies. They were a little busy that day so it took a couple hours. Well worth the wait.

Canada is a big place - I'm sure it'll be helpful if you could let folks know

WHERE, exactly, you went -

with

CITY

and perhaps even an address?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Mine was at the RCMP detachment in Bible Hill NS (Just on the out skirts of Truro) I had also checked the detachment in Enfield which is just outside of Halifax NS it was free too but was going to take 2 days. Truro was closer to me so I went there. I'm assuming that all detachments in NS would be free.

yep, it all varies!!! Some it is free, some it is not. Some you get it back on the spot, others take days or weeks!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I had mine donew in a small town Alberta. They did it on the spot and I just sat there while she did it. It was $25 but I nearly crapped me britches when an RCMP officer came out so she could ask him a question! Turns out it wasn't about me but I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what I managed to do lol.

She said normally they are completed in a week and they call when its done.
