Hi,

Does the intent to marry letter need to be notarized? We are here in mexico and we called the notary to ask about the notary signature and they told us just for the one signature it would cost almost 200 dollars, is this normal? should we find another one cheaper than that? Or is it that big of a deal and even need to be notarized?

No, it doesn't have to be notarized.

The definition of what a notarial service does varies dramatically from one country to another. In the US, their services consist primarily of witnessing a signature, so the cost is generally very low. In some countries, a notary can verify the validity of a document, which costs substantially more.

But, hey... as long as you're both there in Mexico...

The US Citizen Services section at most US consulates will notarize any document that is intended to be submitted to the US government (they'll witness the signature - NOT verify the document itself). The cost is high compared to a notary in the US (I paid $75 when I used this service). I decided to get the letters of intent from myself and my fiancee notarized at the US consulate because it's proof positive, by a witness of the US government, that we were both in the same place at the same time. If I had sent nothing else as proof of the two year meeting requirement, those notary stamps would have been enough proof. I wouldn't have done this if it would have been a serious imposition, like traveling across the country, but we were both there in Saigon and we had the letters with us, so we decided to do it. Seemed more logical than posing behind a newspaper in the style of a ransom letter.

The I 129 F instructions do not indicate that the letters of intent need to be notarized, but make sure that you each submit a letter of intent that is signed and dated. Best of luck!
