Hello

My fiance' and I are looking for advise and understanding for the following statement on the U.S. Embassy of London website.

My fiance' is from Eastbourne, UK. and we are currently trying to get all the documentation that is needed for his interview packet.

On the website for the U.S. Embassy in London under Instruction for Immigrant Visa(K)Applicants applying for a visa in London.

Step Two: There is a link that states "Assemble all the documents required in support of your application".

We are confused with the Termination of Prior Marriage statement below.

Termination of Prior Marriages: Married applicants must obtain an original marriage certificate, or a certified copy, bearing the appropriate seal or stamp of the issuing authority.

Do we need the original Marriage certificate from a 1979 marriage that took place in Finland? My fiance' has been divorced since 1996. He has check with his Ex-wife and she doesn't have it. They have both tried to contact Finland to obtain documention but they have been unsuccessful.

Any advise on if the original Finnish Marriage Certificate is needed would be greatly appreciated and also if it is whom do we contact to apply for a certified copy?

thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Debbie

A married applicant needs to prove that they are indeed married.

An unmarried applicant needs to prove that that are not married.

I think that you are mixing the two circumstances. As this is regarding a fiance(e) petition a previously married person must show that any prior marriage(s) have been legally terminated.

In my case I supplied 2 divorce decrees and zero marriage certificates to show that my 2 prior marriages were legally ended and I was free to marry.

Thank you for your response. I think we will just submit his divorce decree and go with that. I too could not figure out why they would want something so old. Thanks again and best of luck. Debbie
