Hi,

I've been tryign to search to find the threads about importing a vehicle to the us but for some reason i can find them....

I just called Hyundai to see about a letter of compliance, she said it was no problem and ran my VIN to see if there would be any issues for when I did need it. She said that my car meets all US standards except section 208 : my car doesn't have a side passenger airbag. She also said that she found that to be common and hasn't heard of anyone not being able to import their vehicle becasue of it but she was not sure.

My questiona are... would I be allowed to import it with this exception? Would I be able to register it in NYS OR would I have to install a side air bag (in which case I don't think it would be worth importing) to make it compliant?

Call the US department of transportation and ask. Nissan told me I couldn't get my letter for my car because I had daytime running lights, so I called the department of transportation and they told me it's fine. So I called Nissan back and argued with them and they finally gave me my letter.

12/31/2009 - Marriage

07/21/2010 - AOS approved

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

Another thing you could do is contact the DMV in NYS - from what I've heard the local DMVs seem to have the last word on what is/is not compliant.

I had the same problem as you, Huyndai accent 2003, no passenger-side airbag.

We called somewhere, i don't remember exactly where it was. But yeah, that's an important requirement to meet to import your car, if you don't do it before leaving, you need to contact a R.I, Registered importer, and pay a big amount of money at your POE when you'll import your car, and it's under condition you have it fixed in the USA not long after your entry.. I ended up selling my car 1 week before my POE (i only realized 1 week before leaving i couldn't really import the car). I also had lots of troubles finding info on that.. I suggest you sell your car and buy a new one in USA :(

I posted a topic about that in the "Canada" section, if you can find it, you'll have more info with it.

EDIT:

Ok i found the link:

THank you AandB that was exactly what I was looking for...well since mine is a 2001 accent then I will have to practically give it away...but Im glad I looked into it now so that when the time gets closer I can get an ad up and sell it.

Thank you!!!!!!!!
