Wanted to ask everyone who went through the marriage on a K1 how long it took you to change your name? in terms of the processes in US and then in Canada. I am POE on Aug 7th and getting married on the 14th. It just dawned on me I will be surpassing the name change processes soon, is it long? any details will be great.

Hi Amanda!

All you really need to do on the US end is apply for your AOS documents in your married name. You're AP, EAD and eventually your GC will be issued in your married name. You can take your marriage license to the SSN office and to the DMV (with other required documentation) to apply for those documents in your married name as well. It's pretty easy since you are applying for everything for the first time.

As far as Canada goes, I'm not sure. I haven't switched any of my Canadian things over to my married name.

I did the same as the hugglebuggles. I just started using my married name based on my marriage cert and greencard.

We were just married a few weeks ago and I havent had any problems switching to my married name. Aside from trying to remember to sign with it, hehe. especially if your poe is shortly before the wedding. I think it depends on the laws in the state and county you will be married in but mostly you just have to show your marriage license when you get your social security number and send a copy of it with your AOS paperwork. The government knows who we are with all the numbers they assign to us these days, they almost don't need our names hehe.

Only thing i suggest if you want it to be easier is to wait until after your married to get your ssn. It takes a little while anyway so you might as well wait and apply after you're married.

For Canada, i'm just going to wait until things expire before trying to get them in my married name. It's not like i'll be needing them anytime soon!

Hello

Wanted to ask everyone who went through the marriage on a K1 how long it took you to change your name? in terms of the processes in US and then in Canada. I am POE on Aug 7th and getting married on the 14th. It just dawned on me I will be surpassing the name change processes soon, is it long? any details will be great.

As for Canadian things, most places either took just a phone call or email. Some I had to mail or email a copy of my marriage cert, which wasn't difficult at all.

For the CRA you fill out a form and attach your marriage cert. Make sure to include the day you leave Canada, even tho it's not on the form.

12/31/2009 - Marriage

07/21/2010 - AOS approved

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

I changed my name in the US using just my marriage certificate, just brought it with me to get my SSN, DL and when I was added to my husband's bank account. I didn't change anything in Canada except my bank account and I had to go do that in person when I was visiting.
