Hey guys!!

I got married this morning! :) I'm very happy!! Only me and him, we're waiting to do a reception at a later date when my family can come here too.

On the marriage license, i noticed my maiden name is on it, but i think the name i want to use now (married name) was not on it. We already sent it to the Clerk's office, so they can mail us back the marriage certificates. Is it normal they never asked me which name i wanted to use? Or that i never had to write it anywhere? I want to apply for AoS and SSN in my married name, i think all of this might be a problem. Am i wrong? Is it normal?

I'm so confused!!!

Thanks in advance!

01/12/2011: GreenCard approved!!!!

Green card expiration date: 01/05/2013
Sent ROC package to VSC: 11/16/2012

First, Congrats!!

This is what I did:

When we got our marriage certificate back, I took that to the SSN office & asked my name be changed. They (eventually) did it.

When I filed for AOS, I put my new name on all the forms. You would send a copy of your marriage certificate along, to show your name change.

Hope that helps.

8/2/2021:  Mailed N-400

8/4/2021: N-400 received

8/6/2021:  Biometrics to be reused
3/15/2022:  Interview (successful)

Congratulations to both of you! I'm not sure what happened to you guys.. First you would apply for a marriage license then the ceremony. In my case, after the wedding ceremony the judge told me to sign the name that I want to use on our marriage license. After I got the license, we went to SSN office and apply for the card.

where did you get married? some states don't ask for the married name on the marriage license, its just a name change by assumption. I'll be able to find out for you if I know where you got married :D

Thanks for your replies! CDAgirlMI, was your married name showing on the marriage certificate?

When we applied for a certificate, I gave them my maiden name info (cause we weren't married yet).

But I signed it my married name.

So if its in your maiden name, I think you would still be able to change all your new id (AOS, SSN) to your married name. A marriage certificate/license is a valid document for a name change.

Here in Michigan, thats how it happened.

I got married in Texas, at Collin County! So if they "assume" i'm doing a name change, will the SSN office and USCIS "assume" i can change my name even if it's not showing on my marriage license? Haha!

I did the same thing. My married name also wasn't on the marriage certificate. unsure.gif We get married in Illinois.

If there's no space on the marriage certificate for your married name then the name changes are all assumptive. The SSN and USCIS will both take it as a form of legal name change. I'm trying to find a place to see if they do it on the certificate or not, I know some states don't but I'm not sure which ones.

Ok according to e-how, Texas is one of the assumptive ones, where your name change happens by taking the cert to the SSN office, not on the certificate itself :D

That's it really, anywhere I went to change my name they didn't have a problem with it.

Lol, no problem! I've seen this question a few times. I know here in CA we had to put it on the sheet, but I would assume that if you had the option to do that they would have asked you and you would have remembered lol. Theres a few states that do it this way, I think personally that it makes things more confusing for people.

Congrats on the marriage!

It's been answered, but Colorado is the same. Our marriage license has my husbands full name, and then my full name from before I was married. When I went to change my name on documents, they just looked at my husbands last name and assumed that's the name I was changing my last name too.
