Depends on the rental company, its best to call them.

At the border they may question you, but its not strictly against the rules.

I rented from enterprise in Seattle, and asked specifically if I could take it over the border, they said yes. Budget and Avis were a no.

SOME rental companies wont let you cross state lines, let alone the border. So check with them

Depends on rental company

If you were just a Cdn citizen, I belive the answer would be NO!! But since you have your greencard, the Cdn Customs dude/dudette will be ok with it, just depends on the car rental agency

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I just called the rental car company, and they said they don't care; that it would be up to Canada Customs. Should I be fine?

I believe you will be. NEIKS on here is a CDn customs officer. can always search for her under MEMBERS (top right) and email and ask her. But as a greencard holder, you should be fine.

If I were you I would call the POE and double-check before you attempt it. Good luck!

I fly into buffalo every 6 weeks..rent a car and cross at the peace bridge..MOST rental car companies are fine with it..at the border they occasionally ask to see my greencard when entering Canada(because you MUST be a resident of the USA to bring an American rental car across the border) and on occasion the car rental company has given me some piece of paper to show at the border..lol it just basicly says that they are aware I am crossing with the vehicle. I've never had any real issues though..have a great trip!

glad u got a response from the source (Neiks)

Lot of Canadian Citizens(that are stil residents of canada, dont hold greencard, etc) do not realize they can not rent a car and head back to Canada. I know this has caused probs for quite a few for Alaska cruises! Instead of going on a guided tour, they rent a car in Alaska, and then tour they way to Canada--or they try to, but only to get denied entry into Canada. really ruins the day!

As long as you are a US resident/"greencard holder" there is no issue with it for Canada Customs purposes.
Actually, they don't even mind if you are a temporary visa (such as TN-1) holder, or even if you have a US DL; I rented a car at DTW once in 1996 (when I still had my Alberta licence) and drove it to Ayr (near 401's exit 268) for a weekend.
