Laws vary from country to country, as well as the costs. If you live in Jamaica, you may want to seek legal advice with a specialist. As far as having a contested divorce? It depends on how the both of you work your stuff out, but be prepared for anything.

You must file your marriage in the US, then you can divorce him in the US. Papers will be served to him in Jamaica. Donot try to go thru the div in Jamaica, it will be long and tenious.

Sorry things didn't work out.

There is no need to register the marriage in the USA. Yes, she can file for divorce in her home State. Whether he signs anything depends on whether he's willing to. A divorce can be secured without signatures from the respondent. The respondent need only be served and there are many ways to do that including by publication.

They can't but I'm not suggesting the don't know of it. US Citizens who marry abroad are not required to register their marriages in the USA. (period) Filing for a divorce will be how the court knows of the marriage.

I agree. I have plenty of friends and family who have NEVER registered their marriage in Jamaica when they moved to the states and some filed for divorce and had no issues.

nowmz -- good to see you.

One more thing, don't waste your time trying to find him. Mail the papers to the last know address (with proof) that you did that...my (sis) divorce took less than 90days and he refused to sign the papers. My sis is here in the US...
