Wanted to way in on the daycare discussion - there's such a difference between leaving a child at 12 weeks at daycare vs 6 months or 1 yr.

My daughter went to a babysitter at 6 months who took care of 4 children(varying ages) in her own home - she was wonderful and we still know her today. My daughter used to call her MommyBea (her name was Beatrice). I nursed until she was a yr old - which meant that I sent bottles of breast milk along in the diaper bag and then breastfed at home in the evenings - anything is possible :)

Other than the age thing, I wouldn't worry too much about daycare being bad for your child - there's nothing worse then a wimpy little kindergartener hiding behind their parents on the first day of school because they haven't been exposed to social situations with other children. ( Guess you can tell how I feel about that ;) )

I've always credited my daughter's experience with making her resilient and able to deal with varied social scenarios - she never 'made strange' as a baby because she was exposed early on.

That's my 2 cents...I'm also glad that I'm done with daycare forever!

Wow Pauley that's great timing, have fun.

Actually, there wasn't really that much timing involved. :) You have to request them (usually online) for specific dates and name the two specific people to attend, and they call anytime from the day after your request to the morning of the taping and ask you to answer a trivia question about the show (I had to tell them that frequent Late Show neighbor Rupert Gee was the owner of the Hello Deli) to be issued tickets. I had specifically requested tickets for next Wednesday; we aren't getting in to Manhattan in time to attend tapings Tuesday night, and there weren't any scheduled later in the week.

So canning went well, took 5 hours to do 5 jars. I must become more efficient. Pressure canning was a bit scary at first, but it's not so bad. Varba kept checking up on me cause he thought the pressure cooker was going to explode.

Ahh...fond memories of my mother hard at work in the kitchen, late after we went to bed. Back in the 70's when my parents were hippy-ish in nature, she canned everything: Peaches, plums, pears, applesauce, stewed tomatoes, relish, chili sauce and jams. Along with all the frozen blanched vegetables, we were set for winter.

Sounds fun Peachey!

Wow you are brave. I'm very impressed! My mother used to do a lot of canning as well; that pressure cooker used to terrify me. :o

So far this summer I've frozen: yellow beans, turnips, corn, ground cherries, green beans, summer squash, zucchini, eggplant and watermelon. I've also made 2 different types of jam and sour cherry pie.

You can freeze watermelon? Really? it doesn't come out all mushy and flavorless? I love watermelon but my husband hates it. I can't eat a whole thing by myself, even the smaller ones, before it starts to go bad. If there was a way to freeze it, life would be easier.

I used to have a garden at my place in Canada, and I used to can all sorts of stuff. I did several different kinds of pickles, relish, and tomatoes. I also would grow several varieties of hot peppers and pickle them and make homemade hot sauce. I would blanch and freeze beans, peas and carrots, dry my herbs. Some years I really looked forward to doing it, but every so often I just didn't have the energy and ended up just eating stuff fresh and giving the rest away to friends. I also had gardens dedicated to growing strawberries and raspberries. I had a few apple trees as well, but they didn't get large enough to really harvest any before I moved :( I can't wait until we can buy a house and have a garden again. I loved going out there after work, picking a few things and add a meat, and in minutes dinner was ready!!!

My grandmother was a huge canner, and my mom still does. Very popular with the farmers and anyone with a big garden. My brain is a bit fuzzy--working nights does that---but a few yrs back, the company that made a lot of the canning stuff was going to stop making the jars or lids, and caused a huge uproar among the canners, thus they continued on making them!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yeah but the consistency isn't the same. I have a recipe for watermelon muffins and watermelon ice cream. We're leaving for Canada tomorrow for a week, so I had to do something will all my produce!

I planned to freeze veggies out of the garden this year, but we had a nasty groundhog family eating everything before we had a chance to get to any of it. I planted broccoli and Brussels sprouts and they ate it before it was even close to ready. My beans were attacked but not as bad we did get some. The Cucumbers didn't even make it. We did get a few squash, but we had to pick em while still on the small side. Oh well, I replanted some beans and will replant cabbage and zucchini, and Brussels sprouts. I don't think we will see the groundhog back after he met the dog. He is now running around tailless.

Anyways the first day of school started today for 3 of my kids, the oldest started College on Tuesday. So this year I have 3 homeschoolers and I still haven't started I guess I need to get my butt in gear and get them to work.
