Is Davao city Safe

My Fiancee lives in New Visayas, Matanao, Davao Del Sur. I am planning a trip to Davao city to see her. I want to know if it is safe for me to travel to her home for the day? Has anyone spent tome in the Davao del Sur Province? her municipality in Matanao, and her Baracay ( town) is New Visayas. I want to visit her family for the day, but dont want to risk my life to do it.

its safe. you'll be fine, use your head though.....don't flash money, don't act like you've never been there before, don't go down back allies by yourself at night....etc.

Most places in the PI are no more dangerous that some big cities in the US. Just be smart about it. Follow your girl's lead...dont go somewhere she dont feel comfortable going and you will be fine.

Also for about $20 a day....you can hire your own Private Security Guards....from the Provincial Army .....

with both.... you will be 100% safe !!!!!

I live in Magsaysay which is closer in that municipality. Just don't go closer in the mountain coz there's allot of NPA. But don't scared, that place is safe . Just be careful coz you are a foreigner.

I was in Davao City in 2007 had no problems. It was less nerveracking than some countries I've been to.

There are little attacks like this but it doesn't faze the locals much just as most murders in this country aren't that newsworthy unless its really bad. I went through unmanned military checkpoints in central Mindanao and there wasn't a heightened state of alert. Expect to be frisked at shopping malls because that's the way it is.

The typical American isn't the preferred target as the elite local rich are better pickings or targets on the police and military are better justified by the radicals. Don't wave a lot of money around but everyone will assume you've got money anyway. Watch out for traffic and taxis overcharging but that's normal in a lot of countries.

Agreed. Davao, and even most of Mindanao is safe. I'll be in Davao for a few days with my wife and her parents this June and will feel totally secure. I've traveled from Butuan to Surigao City, and Surigao City to Davao several times and have never one felt in danger. Granted, as in many of the provinces, I 'stuck' out in the crowd and got some looks, but that has never bothered me, just chalked it up to curiosity!

I've been to Davao City twice now and find the people to be incredibly warm and inviting.. I can't wait to go back in May!
