Has anybody driven to Montreal for their CR-1 interview from Alberta? I prefer to drive over flying and it'll be about the same $ (gas & hotel) since a ticket from Edmonton to Montreal is over $900.00 itself.

We drove from Calgary to Florida and back, does that count

Your other option is Via Rail, of course, we took that from Edmonton to Toronto and back, I think it was 3 days each way - kind of a nice trip really :)

I hear WestJet has great deals on, 900 does seem pretty high price to pay for sure.

I have driven from just south of Calgary to outside of Toronto about 10 years ago. Going to tell you it is a long long drive, and personally I wouldn't do it again since a good part of the Trans Canada in Ontario is or was only 2 lanes. If you do drive be careful at night as there are some mighty big moose out there. If you do drive I would recommend taking your time and enjoying it.

I can tell you that my husband has his interview the end of April and he got a one way flight from Calgary to Toronto (for his medical) for $187.00 through Westjet. He will just take the train to Montreal for his interview after. You have a bit of time until you get to that point, so maybe you will find the flights will be cheaper?? We thought about him driving from Alberta, but that didn't last long...LOL Good luck to you!

Have you checked tickets from the westjet site? They are pretty cheap and from winnipeg to montreal it only costs me less than 200 each way and im sure alberta is no different. It is definately worth it to go by air because of the reduced time compared to by highway which could take days for you to get there. Does this maybe have anything to do with fear of flying? I know when I was first moving to winnipeg I did not even want to go by plane but wanted to go by train or bus, lol. I sucked it up though cause it was the cheapest route available at the time.

If you do not want to go by plane under any circumstances I think the next best option would be by bus. Train is waaay too expensive and the via rail stops at toronto over night and starts up the next day... so if you went that route you would need a hotel there too. Taking the train would be too expensive!

If you booked your ticket with greyhound bus 21 days in advance you would get a pretty decent discount and it would cost you about 100 dollars one way. If you really do not mind it taking 2 days to get to montreal than I suppose this would be the option for you.

I wouldnt really recommend using your car to drive across the country because I'm sure it would cost alot more in gas than it would taking a plane. Anyways hope this was helpful to you and good luck on what you decide.

Its true sometimes flying out of Calgary is cheaper. Perhaps check for flights from Calgary to Montreal. Only a 3 hour drive from Edmonton, pay for parking in Calgary and fly out of there?

I have driven from Edmonton (and the NWT) to Montreal numerous times as a child. Its a horribly horribly long drive, especially through Ontario. One lane and hard to pass a lot of the time. I would fly rather than drive. You never know what could happen on the road, causing delays and possibly missing your appointment.

Has anybody driven to Montreal for their CR-1 interview from Alberta? I prefer to drive over flying and it'll be about the same $ (gas & hotel) since a ticket from Edmonton to Montreal is over $900.00 itself.

I flew to Montreal from Edmonton and it cost around $850 at that time. That was in 2008.

Its a long drive, but if you have the time and the ambition it wouldn't be impossible. I don't have any personal experience with that particular route, but I've been on some pretty long road trips and they can be as pleasant or unpleasant as you make them. I would really recommend not trying it alone- having someone along to talk to and keep you alert would really be beneficial!

I was just reading your signature. My husband is from Colorado and we met in person for the first time in the summer of 2005 as well! How cute is that? :)

Flying is faster AND safer than driving.

While statistically true, some people either 1) prefer to drive (like the OP), or 2) Just do not fly.

Small world! :D Burt is from Colorado Springs. I make the drive there every couple months and that's a two day drive. I have never travelled through Canada past Saskatchewan so I wasn't sure of the roads and such. But I love an adventure!

It's still a WAYS away so maybe I'll change my mind lol

I have travelled to many places in the world, I am from Alberta. Up until I took that via rail trip to Toronto (that was for work), I don't know that I had ever been further East (in Canada) than Alberta. Now there might have been a childhood trip via Sask. at some point, but not that I remember.

My parents, to my knowledge, never ever travelled further east than Sask. It's not all that unusual :)
