PITTSBURGH -- Newly acquired forward Alexei Ponikarovsky won't play for the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Rangers in New York on Thursday night because he lacks a U.S. work visa.

Because Ponikarovsky became a Canadian citizen while playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the process for obtaining the work visa should take only a couple days. A native of the Ukraine, he could play for Pittsburgh during Saturday's home game against the Dallas Stars.

The visa is required when a citizen of another country accepts employment in the United States.

The Penguins acquired Ponikarovsky from the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night for prospect Luca Caputi and defenseman Martin Skoula, who was subsequently traded to the New Jersey Devils for a fifth-round draft pick.

See? No special treatment! :P

This line is the best: "The visa is required when a citizen of another country accepts employment in the United States." :lol: Duh.

Good to know the rules apply to everyone! Although... the fact he can get it in a few days is at least a little bit of special treatment. They would tell us to shut up and get in line.

Poor guy has to wait a FEW DAYS!!! Of course being stuck in Toronto could feel like a lifetime,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

They'll play better just being away from the Leafs. Maybe they have a clause if you don't play well here it's back to TO.

I must admit true Leaf fans are a tough breed!! Give them credit for that. Not sure why anyone would put up with sooo much sorrow,lol, but when they win the cup in 29999999, it will be 1 sweet party!!

It's okay Leafgal...I was a Canucks fan during the horrible 58 point and 63 point seasons...the MESSier era. It was pretty brutal...and fans in Vancouver are even more fickle. There were nights where the attendance was in the 11000 range (capacity is 18630).

Burke is a great GM. He'll right that ship. Just be prepared for another couple years of grief before it is!

I've seen Burkie do some pretty great things. The Canucks were a bad team before he took over. Two and a half seasons later they made the playoffs...and proceeded to do so each year for the next few years.

He's a very intelligent man, and has excellent hockey sense. He'll turn the Leafs around and make the playoffs in 2011/2012. You heard it here first -- and I'm NOT a Leafs fan!

Well, I'm also an Avs fan so it really balances itself out. One team is doing poorly, another team is doing quite well. Now, years that they both suck? Pretty miserable indeed! :P

Speaking of trades, I can't believe the Avs traded Wolski. I'm pretty unhappy about that!! :angry:
