Canadians feeling guilty about taking jobs away from Americans?

I was on a job forum today and it seems that I inadvertently hit a nerve on some Americans, who feel that "foreign professionals" should not "steal" jobs from some Americans. I personally don't feel guilty. Your thoughts??

Nope shouldn't feel guilty in the slightest, most of the time the more qualified person will get a job, especially in this economy where it's pretty much the employer's choice as so many people are looking for work.

I won't even get started on the illegal immigration-side though, might hit 500 posts on my own in here

Absolutely no guilt whatsoever, when I worked and I wasn't a U.S. citizen yet. I was working legally and that's just the way it is.

There's just as many Americans working in other countries.

As far as I'm concerned, if I live in a country, work in a country and pay taxes in a country, then I am part of that country. I'm not a citizen until I'm a citizen, obviously...but in all respects, I'm going to be fully integrated into America, contributing to the American economy and tax base.

It's just a different vision of what it means to be an American. Neither view is "wrong" per se.

I've found that usually those Americans who have a problem with an immigrant working in the States somehow forgot along the way that almost all of us, within the last few generations, had a family member that was an immigrant too. One of those lil' funny things that most people forget here for some reason and is usually summed up by the overwhelming dumbhead population hehe

As an 'American', it doesn't bother me at all for LEGAL immigrants (no matter where they are from) to work here. I do have issues with some that take jobs requiring them in interact with the public, but don't know how to speak any English. But that's another issue entirely.

If my husband wants to become a US citizen, that's fine. If he doesn't, that's fine too. It is entirely up to him.

Edited to include: It was pointed out to me several years ago that we are all from North America. So I try to say US citizen instead.

Being that I moved down to Florida, everyone you talk to here is from somewhere else. I've yet to meet someone (or at least, gotten to the matter of their roots) who was born and raised here. Will I feel guilty to stand in line amongst them for a job? Not in the least. I've paid my dues, in many respects, to live here, and to soon work and function here just as they do.

I find no guilt in that.

I do, 100%, agree with Married2009 in saying that I find difficulty in foreign immigrants coming to any country, not learning the language of that country as best as they can, and still expecting the same opportunities or expecting those already in place to bend those opportunities to fit them. That is another issue entirely, one that I'm sure is addressed on VJ fairly often... but that's the only time I could see someone's reasoning in begrudging someone else an opportunity.

And yet Canadians and Americans go and work all over the world and never bother to learn the language of the country they are living in - and it doesn't seem to be a big deal. Maybe it's arrogant for us as (predominantly) English speakers to expect them to have perfect or near perfect English.

Perhaps is different scope, maybe you just stumbled into some prior sh|t?

1. company moves manufacturing to other country, employs the locals there or

2. H1-B flame or

3. debate about illegal workers or

4. IT offshore-outsourcing flame

5. travelling nurses debate

If you are 'legal' to be in the USA, IMO, you should not feel guilty about having a 'job' in the USA.

I'll suggest to you that you stumbled into some 'prior sh|t' at that 'other' portal.
