finally!! my fiancee got her k-1 visa today!! it should've just stayed home from work today - all i've been doing all day is checking on flights, the AOS procedure, EAD and AP documents, etc. it didn't take very long for my sense of relief to be overtaken by the realization of all the things that we now must plan and do - and i thought we were free and clear. HA!!

couple of questions - is JFK the only POE that issues EADs? if she doesn't go through JFK, how long does it take to get an EAD? how long does it take to get AP travel documents? when and where do we need to fill for a SS #?

temp stamp at JFK is not valid much anymore

Time to get EAD and AP is about 60 days AFTER you file for status adjustment

SSN is filed for at the SSA office

YMMV

Congrats!!

The JFK/ EAD thing died last summer, I believe after reports of fraudulent stamps being used...

You get an EAD and AP now if you file for them (free of charge) with the AOS. So to answer your question, expect them in 60-90 days from filing your AOS. Depends on how quickly you get married after entry, therefore.

Technically, you can apply for an EAD as soon as you arrive, but it costs $340, expires with the I-94 and potentially takes just as long to come through. Most employers aren't going to offer a job that you might, at best, be able to do for 30 days before having to stop again.

For the SSN, you are advised to wait 10-14 days for your entry to show up on the SAVE system. If they tell you they can't find you, come back the next day until you show up. Takes about 2 weeks for the card to arrive from ordering.

K1s do qualify for an SSN, so don't let them tell you otherwise. If they don't know how to handle a K1 request for an SSN, ask for a Supervisor. There's a .pdf link floating around on the forum that shows the SSA regulations for when someone does/ doesn't qualify.

Timeline Summary:

so the best way to get the EAD and AP now is to file for it along with the AOS papers? it sounds like it's also a cheaper route.
