I recently purchased a ticket to the Philippines without knowing my passport will expire few minutes of my arrival time. Will I get trouble with the immigration checks with that? I have green card with my married name though and I am planning to renew the passport in the Philippines.

And also, I will be reporting my marriage sometime next week so I can use my married name on my new passport, but the when I purchased the ticket it was on my single name. Will I get problem returning ?

Will you be landing in PI the day your passport expires?

I would call the airline, explain the situation and check. You may have problems with the return flight because the passenger name has to match the ID document. Ask them if you can change your name for your return trip to your married name, and if not, would your marriage certificate, green card in your maiden name would be sufficient.

Some airlines also will not allow you to travel on a passport that is expiring within a certain period of time.

Timeline Summary:

you will get through without any problems but aside from having a GC, it's better to renew your passport at your nearest phil. before you leave, to avoid unecessary questioning. it's always better to travel with a passport that's at least 6 months valid (airlines prefer that too)

your problem though is you cannot change your passport to your married name if your ticket is in your maiden name. (airline rule: name on ticket should be the same with that on passport)

so, your choice, change the name on the ticket or renew your passport with your maiden name still

You can ask your airline and get the correct answer...but, I think you have to have an expiration date of 6 months outside your date of departure to board the outgoing flight.

my aunt traveled from canada to phil with an expired passport. BUT she went to the phil consulate and applied for a certificate i think, and did it all in one day. her situation though was a bit different (her mom died and its important for her to travel asap. so the consulate gave her a letter and just have the passport renewed in phil)... perhaps call the consulate and even the airline if they will let travel w/ a close to expiration passport. my guess is they would but that's just a guess. good lluck

hmmm, i think i jsut read a similar post/situation as yours...

anyway, the airlines rule is that the name on the ticket should be the same on the passport.

so either you call the airline to change the name on your ticket, or renew your passport with still your maiden name on it, which shouldn't really affect your status here in the US anyway

but whatever you choose, it's better to renew your passport before you travel to avoid unecessary questions from concerned immigration people when they see that your passport is expired (because you can renew it before you leave the phils and be alright)

still, there are some airlines that require that the passport you use be valid for a minimum number of months, so since you're going to renew your passport anyway, might as well renew before leaving the country

it would be a lot safer for you that way

I would call the airline, explain the situation and check. You may have problems with the return flight because the passenger name has to match the ID document. Ask them if you can change your name for your return trip to your married name, and if not, would your marriage certificate, green card in your maiden name would be sufficient.

Some airlines also will not allow you to travel on a passport that is expiring within a certain period of time.

hi. i just wanna ask if you think i will be able to return here in the U.S if i will go home to phils. with a roundtrip ticket even my passport will expire after 2 months of my vacation? my husband called the airline yesterday if what they will need from me in returning here. and they said only the permanent resident card. they said also that my passport is fine as long as its not yet expired while im traveling. but im still confused because 95% is saying no problem but the 5 % is saying i should renew it first or while im in the phils. any advice?

thank you

I have to agree with southcalhog why not renew it while in the Phils, unless you don't plan to travel with a Philippine passport again after you get back.

As long as a passport isn't expired you can travel with it
