Legal Responsibility of Sponsor/CO-SPonsor

I was asked 3 times today but people whom i approached about being a co-sponsor for Hani. Every one of them asked basically the same thing. "I am not saying he is but what if....he is a person of interest or a terrorist...will I be in trouble if I am the Co-sponsor?"

I do not know how to answer that. First of all Hani is not a terrorist. I do not know what to say! I repeat over and over that the I134 is for preventing immigrants from taking means tested benefits from the governement. I cant even find a link that mentions these what ifs. I understand the concern..no one wants to get in trouble. but I am so tired that I cant think straight enough to relax their minds.

Please, any advice on this? My head is pounding now and I need to have an answer from one of them, within the next few days.

thank you

cali

They may be looking for an easy excuse. Rather than hurt you with a response like they aren't up to helping they use the "fear" as their out.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Ask them to look at the form. It is a guarantee of financial support only. Nowhere on the form does it ask the sponsor to be a "character witness" for the beneficiary. It doesn't even require the sponsor to KNOW the beneficiary. If the beneficiary turned out to be Osama Bin Laden, and ended up being convicted and receiving 3000 life sentences, the only thing the sponsor would be liable for is any welfare benefits he collected while he was in jail.

Seriously, they have nothing to worry about. Offer to have the form prepared by a lawyer so they can ask questions about their legal liability.

thanks for the time everyone. I did say that really. I had posted last nigt on another topic, one potential cosponsor is someone i know through a group from my old city and not personally. He asked if he could put a note. a disclaimer type thing that says i do not know them personally, I am just willing to cosponsor him but i dont know anything about their intentions. i told him he could write what he wants because its only about the federal aid. someone else said I am scared but couldnt voice why. its really frustrating because I would do it in a second for anyone of them, if I could.

I have jumped through all kinds of hoops about this, to the point of giving references for myself.

When I travelled overseas, many times, i never had a visa prior to leaving the usa. I would get to POE for every country and pay a few bucks, and thats it. The process here is soooooo elaborate. Its amazing anyone can come.

Have them look over the form themselves and see that it is only financial responsibility.

It is only a financial thing, the sponsor is not liable for any criminal activity that the "sponsee" commits :)

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

it's tough to find a co-sponsor. i was in your shoes before, it doesn't matter how you explain or show them forms to read, because they don't understand the process, they are not going to trust you. you need to find someone who really trust you, instead of just asking anybody. because you are wasting your time. Immigration is difficult alot of people know this and does mis-understand the process.
