Hello all,

I already know the answer to this but to make my fiancee feel a little more at easy she would like me to ask: "If there is an English speaking requirment for K1 approvals?"

I tell her on no document that her and I filled out does it say anything about having to know the English language or that it is a must to be approved/submit applications.

Also not everyone in the world speaks the English language and visas are given all the time so that would be the same case here. When she is here I will assist her in learning the language of course.

So I would like your assistance in telling her since her interview is next month Feb 2010...Would the Colombian Embassy deny her, her visa because she only knows a few English words and doesnt understand it? But it is sooooooooooo sexy and adorable hearing her speak it...like I'm sure she thinks the same when she hears me speaking Spanish.

Thank you

You are also not going to see anything on any of the forms that indicates you need to have the ability to communicate with each other but that doesn't mean that ability isn't needed. The key is the couple's ability to communicate. There is no requirment that it be in English.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
Understanding the big picture is priceless. Anonymous

I don't know about Columbia - but most of 2009 - K-1s were getting dinged for NOT showing ability to communicate between the foreign person and the USC.

USUALLY - this 'ability to communicate' can be documented inside a paragraph of that wonderful 'Evolution of Relationship' letter that SHE presents on interview day at the Embassy.

For those in Guangzhou, it seemed to make the difference, in 2009.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

No english language rquirement

BUT...(oh no, it is the Butt Monkey which means everything said previously means nothing!)

SOME consulates have been known to make an issue of the matter of language IF you and your fiancee do not have a COMMON language with which to communicate. It does not have to be English. These tend to be the "hgh fraud consulates", often the middle east, and far east, and the Indian subcontinent.

Yes, I agree with the others here. Technically there is no requirement to speak english but as others have said, the ability for the two of you to comunicate is important and some consulates may place a higher value on this. The unfortunate thing is that every consulate and even every consular officer has their own feeling about this. Just do your best to show that the two of you can communicate together and the more understanding of the english language the beneficiary has the better. Remember that the beneficiary will be coming to a place where english is the primary language and at some point along the way they should be learning and able to communicate in this language.

Best of Luck to you.

Some consulates will ask in what language do you converse with your SO? They will then switch to that language. It's only proper, don't you think?

English would be best for the CO obviously. And knowledge of that language will help here in the US.
